🚨 Arrested? The Best Thing You Can Say Is Nothing. 🚨

One of the most important rights you have when arrested is the right to remain silent.

Many people believe they can “talk their way out” of an arrest. Unfortunately, statements made during an investigation can be misunderstood, taken out of context, or used against you later in court.

âś… Be respectful.
âś… Provide identification if required.
✅ Clearly state: “I am exercising my right to remain silent and I want an attorney.”

Remember: Police are gathering evidence. You are not required to help build a case against yourself.

Protect your rights. Protect your future.

If you or a loved one has been arrested, contact Shakhan & Wilkerson Law immediately.

⚖️ What Is Contempt of Court in a Domestic Relations Case?

When a judge issues an order in your divorce, custody, child support, or visitation case, that order is not a suggestion—it is a command.

A person may be held in contempt of court if they willfully fail to follow a court order, such as:

✔️ Refusing to pay court-ordered child support or alimony
✔️ Denying court-ordered visitation
✔️ Failing to transfer property as ordered by the court
✔️ Violating custody or parenting plan provisions
✔️ Ignoring other obligations imposed by a judge

If the court finds someone in contempt, the consequences can be serious and may include fines, attorney’s fees, make-up parenting time, wage garnishment, or even jail time in some circumstances.

If your ex is not following a court order—or if you have been accused of violating one—it is important to speak with an experienced attorney as soon as possible.

📞 Need help enforcing a court order or defending against a contempt action? Contact Shakhan & Wilkerson Law today.

đź’” Gray Divorce: Why Going It Alone Can Cost You More Than You Think

More couples over 50 are choosing divorce than ever before. While the children may be grown, the legal and financial issues are often far more complex.

A gray divorce can involve:
âś… Retirement accounts and pensions
âś… Investment portfolios
âś… Real estate and vacation homes
âś… Long-term alimony considerations
âś… Estate planning and inheritance concerns
âś… Healthcare and insurance issues

After decades of building a life together, one mistake in a settlement agreement can impact your finances for years—or even decades—to come.

An experienced family law attorney can help protect your assets, identify hidden risks, negotiate favorable terms, and ensure you understand the long-term consequences of every decision before you sign.

If you’re considering a gray divorce, don’t leave your future to chance.

đźš” Can Police Lie to You During an Interrogation in Georgia?

Yes. In Georgia, as under federal law, police officers are generally permitted to use certain deceptive tactics during investigations and interrogations. For example, officers may falsely claim they have evidence against you, tell you a witness identified you, or suggest that another person has implicated you.

However, there are limits. Law enforcement cannot use coercion, threats, or conduct that overcomes a person’s free will and results in an involuntary confession. Courts will examine the totality of the circumstances when deciding whether a statement was voluntary and admissible.

The safest approach if law enforcement wants to question you is to remember:

âś… You have the right to remain silent.
âś… You have the right to an attorney.
âś… Anything you say can be used against you in court.
âś… You do not have to answer questions without legal counsel present.

Before you try to explain yourself, understand this: many criminal cases are built on statements made by the accused. Protect your rights first.

If you have been contacted by law enforcement or are under investigation, contact Shakhan & Wilkerson Law today.

Thinking about divorce or separation? One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting too long to get their finances in order.

Before filing, make sure you understand your income, expenses, debts, retirement accounts, investments, insurance coverage, and monthly budget. Many people focus on who gets the house while overlooking retirement accounts, hidden assets, tax consequences, and the true cost of maintaining two households.

The more prepared you are financially, the better positioned you'll be to protect your future, your children, and your hard-earned assets.

Don't wait until you're in the middle of a divorce to start gathering important financial records and understanding your options.

Military divorce is different.

When a service member or military spouse faces divorce, issues involving military retirement, deployments, child custody, survivor benefits, healthcare benefits, and federal laws can significantly impact the outcome of the case. What works in a civilian divorce may not work in a military divorce.

One mistake involving military retirement benefits or a parenting plan during deployment can have consequences that last for years.

If you are an active-duty service member, reservist, veteran, or military spouse considering divorce, make sure you understand your rights before making important decisions about your family, finances, and future.
