As noted in this timely WSJ article, the physical, emotional, and financial cost of caring for an aging loved one can be enormous. Asking the right questions in advance can make all the difference. Are financial and medical powers of attorney in place? Can we afford the in-home care that will soon be needed? How does the cost of assisted living compare to in-home care? How might we ever afford nursing home care if keeping mom at home becomes infeasible? Should we be exploring long-term care insurance now? How can Medicare and Medicaid play a role in financing the cost of long-term care? If you know someone struggling with these questions, you might pass along this article. By sharing how these issues touch everyone’s life at some point, the authors do a great job of encouraging people to start thinking about these questions sooner rather than later.

Legal Aid Executive Director Steve Gottlieb is retiring soon after a tenure at Atlanta Legal Aid that began in 1969 with a Reggie fellowship. In the ensuing decades, Steve built the preeminent legal services program in the country. The hallmark of Atlanta Legal Aid’s success is its innovative and impactful programming that has evolved to meet and serve scores of emerging legal needs across the Atlanta metro area.

To celebrate Steve and ensure Legal Aid’s meaningful impact for another generation, we are raising funds to establish the Steve Gottlieb Innovation Fund.

Spread the word: Help with the Georgia Psychiatric Advance Directive is here!

When the Georgia legislature enacted the Psychiatric Advance Directive (PAD) in the spring of 2022, they did not provide funding to ensure that members of Georgia's mental health recovery community learned about the PAD, understood its purpose, and could be confident in completing the form correctly. GMHCN saw the needs there, and convened a group of dedicated and talented advocates and stakeholders to produce something that will be useful to our peers as they complete their Psychiatric Advance Directives.

Chris Johnson, GMHCN Interim Executive Director, thanks and acknowledges the following individuals and organizations for their extended, vocal, and consistent support of peer support, once again demonstrated through their extraordinary efforts in helping make these PAD tools useful, practical, and available to anyone at no charge:

Anne Hernandez, GradyHealth
Devon Orland, Georgia Advocacy Office
Daniel D. Munster, Esq., The Eldercare & Special Needs Law Practice of Daniel D. Munster
John Collins, Superior Court of Fulton County
Marci Tribble, GradyHealth
Maxwell Ruppersburg, Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities
Rachel Gadra Rankin, Georgia State University College of Law
Sherry Jenkins Tucker, Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network
Susan Goico, Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc.
