Today we celebrate Δεκαπενταύγουστο, one of the most important holy days of the year and we are taking you to the beautiful Cycladic island of Folegandros to the iconic Church of Panagia.
⛪ Perched high on a rocky hillside above Chora, Panagia is the largest church on Folegandros and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The church is believed to have been built on the site of an ancient temple, with materials from the original structure incorporated into its construction. Ancient inscriptions, sculptures, and statue bases can still be seen in and around the church today.
A marble inscription dates a renovation of the church to 1687, while Panagia took on its present form following a reconstruction that began in 1816 and was completed in 1821.
🙏 The church also holds a special place in the traditions and history of Folegandros. Its treasured icon of the Virgin Mary is connected to centuries-old stories of pirates and local legends. During Easter, one of the island’s most beloved traditions is the procession of the icon, which is carried throughout Folegandros, visiting homes and communities across the island.
Visitors can reach Panagia by following the winding cobblestone path from Pounta Square in Chora, a 15-minute walk. From its spectacular position above the village, the church offers breathtaking panoramic views of Folegandros and the endless blue of the Aegean Sea.
