Did you know August 26 commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment, which protected women’s right to vote?

Tennessee played a major role in making it happen! On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th and final state needed to ratify the amendment. The deciding vote came from 24-year-old Representative Harry T. Burn, who voted in favor after receiving a letter from his mother encouraging him to support women’s suffrage.

As a woman and a Tennessean, this history makes me proud! Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we honor the women who fought to make their voices heard and remember the power of using our own.
