We want to shine a spotlight on board member Sarah Corley. She has served on our Board of Directors since 2019. We are so grateful for all of Sarah's hard work and many contributions to The Mediation Center's mission as a member of our board!

Sarah developed a passion for mediation in law school as a parent/child mediator with the Juvenile Rights Clinic. In 1992, she decided to pursue this calling and moved to Asheville to serve as Executive Director of The Mediation Center. In 1996, she started her own mediation practice, MediationWorks NC, and has worked as private mediator ever since. She is certified by the NC Dispute Resolution Commission in Superior Court, Family Financial and Clerk of Court mediation, and serves on the panel of mediators for federal district court and the United States Postal Service. She is a member of the NC Academy of Superior Court Mediators and the NC Association of Professional Family Mediators.

Sarah has served on many non-profit boards during her time in Asheville, including The YWCA, Western Carolinians for Criminal Justice, the Rainbow Mountain Foundation, and Pisgah Legal Services where she served on the Program and Executive Committees and as the President and Vice President of the Board over the course of her seven years there. When she's not volunteering for The Mediation Center, Sarah loves to play tennis, practice yoga, and read. She has two dogs: Daisy, a beagle mix, and Luci, an 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION TIP: This weeks tip is about dealing with family conflict during the holiday season.
During the holidays you may spend time with family you don't see often, and their views and values may differ from yours. Three keys to healthy and happy interactions during family events are.
1. Focusing on that family member’s enjoyable qualities rather than aspects that frustrate you. This creates common ground where you can then develop respect.
2. If possible, discuss and inform others of sticky topics that you would rather not talk about around the dinner table, and schedule a more appropriate time to talk.
3. Focus on joyful moments that arise and things that you love about the holidays. Notice the happiness it brings you and carry that with you in each interaction.
