Incredibly honored to be selected by the Denver Bar Association for the Volunteer Lawyer of the Year award, based on my work assisting clients who otherwise could not afford estate planning and estate administration services.

Very honored to be selected this year by Super Lawyers as a "Rising Star" for Estate Planning and Probate Law.

The Rising Stars list recognizes no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in each state. Selection is based on peer nominations and evaluations, evaluation of the candidates by third-party research, and professional achievement. To be eligible for inclusion in Rising Stars, a candidate must be either 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less.

I love rock & roll and recently watched a documentary on John Lennon and the Beatles called “Above Us Only Sky.” I learned that John Lennon sadly cut his son Julian out of his will, disinheriting him.

To decide to disinherit a child is serious. It’s is very important that parents understand the implications of such a decision not only for potential conflicts that are created for their own children after the parents pass but also implications for wealth imbalances for future generations. Additionally, those disinherited often are left with sadness, grief and confusion as to why they were left out of the will. It’s rarely just about the money but also about the emotional pain of wanting to feel loved and accepted.

I just sat down with a couple who are parents to a young child and they asked how to plan for the event that an emergency happens and they can no longer care for their own child. Who will then serve as parent(s) to the child?

This should be addressed in any estate plan in which minor children are involved. It is hard to see when parents do not know this and leave such an important decision up to the courts.
