AIPLA is pleased to feature Joseph Re in our August member spotlight. Joe is a former President of AIPLA, has been at Knobbe Martens in California since 1987, the year he became an AIPLA member. Joe wrote his first amicus brief for AIPLA in 1989 and has been writing them ever since. Throughout his career, Joe has been successfully trying high-stakes patent and medical device cases to juries, having obtained for his clients several nine-figure jury awards. That success before juries and the Federal Circuit has earned him countless awards, including being listed among the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal. Before joining Knobbe, Mr. Re served as a law clerk for the Honorable Howard T. Markey, the first Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit. He also served as President of the Federal Circuit Bar Association. Get to know Joe:

❓What is your hobby/what do you like doing outside of work?
💡I love to travel with my family and see old friends. I really enjoy going to Europe and visiting Salina, Italy, a small island off the coast of Sicily where my father and his ancestors were born.

❓What is your favorite part about being an AIPLA member?
💡Getting to know its members. Now I look back and appreciate all the close friends and colleagues I have because of being active in AIPLA for so long.

❓Why did you choose to become an IP practitioner?
💡Both my parents were lawyers and thus I always suspected I would become a lawyer. But I had a great headstart when exposed to patent litigation as a 12-year old when my father would hear patent cases when sitting by designation as a federal judge. He brought home the devices at issue, one being a foldable hanger. I went to engineering school hoping I would become a patent litigator.

❓What advice would you give to younger members/new practitioners?
💡Volunteering is how you get to know people, develop relationships, and learn about the profession. I am most grateful for exactly that. I have learned so much by participating in AIPLA, becoming an officer, and staying active with AIPLA.

⚖️ Recent blockbuster trade secret verdicts are facing a new level of appellate scrutiny. What can practitioners learn from the reversals?

Join AIPLA on September 9 for Latest Developments in Trade Secret Damages, an online CLE examining recent decisions in Appian, Trinseo, and CODA and what they mean for trade secret litigation strategy.

The panel will explore three issues courts are scrutinizing closely: specificity in identifying trade secrets, jury instructions on the burden of proof for unjust enrichment damages, and apportionment of damages across multiple trade secrets.

Featuring:
• Benjamin Fink, Berman Fink Van Horn P.C.
• John Marsh, Bailey Cavalieri LLC
• Dawn Rice Hall, FTI Consulting
• Stephanie Southwick, Burford Capital

Gain practical insights to help build damages theories that can withstand post-trial and appellate scrutiny.
