The Navajo Nation has secured approximately $285 million in federal BEAD funding across three states, the largest broadband infrastructure investment ever awarded to a Tribal Nation.

This isn’t just about faster Wi-Fi. It’s about connecting thousands of homes to reliable internet access that supports remote work, online education, telehealth, and long-term economic growth. Even more significantly, the Nation will retain ownership and oversight of the infrastructure, reinforcing Tribal self-determination in how digital networks are built and managed. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has officially gained full federal recognition: a milestone generations in the making. The Department of the Interior added the Lumbee Tribe to the federal register following legislation signed in December 2025 by Donald Trump, formally establishing the Tribe’s government-to-government relationship with the United States.

This recognition opens the door to critical federal programs supporting healthcare, education, housing, infrastructure, economic development, and natural resource management, while strengthening the Tribe’s sovereign authority and role in federal consultation. It’s a powerful step forward for one of the largest Tribal populations in the eastern U.S. and a reminder of the continued progress being made toward justice, self-determination, and honoring Tribal nations.

✨ A moment worth celebrating for Indigenous communities and the Lumbee people.

Rep. Larry Pemberton Jr., a member of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, has become the first Native American elected and sworn into the Connecticut General Assembly following a special election for the 139th House District.

Pemberton’s election breaks new ground for Native voices in state policymaking and brings long-overdue visibility to Indigenous communities in Hartford and beyond. Leaders from his Tribal nation and state officials gathered in support at the State Capitol, underscoring both the symbolic and practical significance of this moment.

As he assumes office, many are celebrating this achievement not just as a first but as a reminder of the importance of inclusion, civic engagement, and representation in shaping policies that affect all communities. The U.S. Department of the Interior has released a new Strategic Direction for the Bureau of Indian Education, outlining a performance-driven roadmap to improve student outcomes while strengthening Native language, culture, and community-based education.

The plan reinforces tribal sovereignty and local control by prioritizing flexible, tribally driven approaches rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. Building on reforms from the past decade, Interior reports that graduation rates at BIE-funded schools increased from 51% in 2015 to 79% in 2025.

Looking ahead to 2030, the strategy sets measurable goals across student success, cultural identity and language preservation, wellness, technology access, and facilities management. As implementation moves forward, tribal leaders and education stakeholders will be watching how accountability, data reporting, and flexibility are balanced to support long-term success for Native students across diverse communities. As federal immigration agents increase their presence across Minneapolis, Indigenous communities are responding familiarly. Members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) have resumed community patrols along Franklin Avenue, an area long recognized as the heart of the city’s urban Native community.

Initially founded in Minneapolis in 1968, AIM organized patrols to protect Native residents from aggressive policing. More than fifty years later, those efforts have returned as volunteers monitor neighborhoods, support elders and youth, and help community members navigate daily life amid heightened enforcement and growing uncertainty.

Community leaders say the patrols are rooted in care, safety, and collective responsibility, reflecting how history continues to resurface in moments of tension. Read the full story here:https://ictnews.org/news/full-circle-aim-patrols-back-on-minneapolis-streets-as-tensions-rise/

The Oglala Sioux Tribe says three enrolled tribal members arrested last week in Minneapolis are currently being held in ICE detention at Fort Snelling. Tribal President Frank Star Comes Out called for their immediate release, stating that tribal citizens are U.S. citizens by law and are not subject to immigration enforcement. The tribe says it has been denied basic information about the detainees unless it agrees to an immigration arrangement with ICE, which it has refused. One of the four detained members has since been released. The incident has renewed concerns about ICE detaining Native citizens and raised broader questions about jurisdiction, identification, and the treatment of Indigenous people during immigration enforcement operations. The TSA has confirmed that photo IDs issued by federally recognized Tribal Nations remain fully accepted at airport security checkpoints. This clarification comes as TSA prepares to launch its new ConfirmID program on February 1, 2026.

While travelers without acceptable identification may pay a $45 fee to verify their identity, TSA has emphasized that this fee does not apply to passengers using Tribal-issued photo IDs, including Enhanced Tribal Cards. These IDs will continue to allow travelers to proceed through security without added costs or requirements. UPDATE | Minneapolis
Multiple Native American community members have been detained or questioned by ICE during ongoing immigration raids across Minneapolis this week. Tribal leaders and advocates report concerns that Native citizens are being racially profiled and mistaken for undocumented immigrants, particularly in and around Little Earth, a historic Native housing community on the city’s south side.

Several individuals, including enrolled Tribal citizens, were detained without immediate access to verification of citizenship or Tribal identification, leaving families and advocates scrambling to locate them. Tribal governments, attorneys, and state officials are now working to secure releases and demand accountability.

This is a rapidly developing situation. Native leaders are urging awareness, documentation, and community support as questions grow around ICE practices, racial profiling, and the treatment of Indigenous people who are citizens of this land. President Trump vetoed the bipartisan Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit Act, which focused on how rural communities would pay their share of a long-planned clean water pipeline in southeastern Colorado. The Arkansas Valley Conduit is a federally backed project designed to deliver treated surface water to communities that currently rely on groundwater contaminated with naturally occurring radioactive elements. The veto does not cancel construction already underway, but it removes a financing option that would have allowed communities up to 100 years to repay no-interest federal loans, creating uncertainty about how the remaining costs will be covered and when the project can be fully completed.
