A new job, a new relationship, a new city: any of them can turn into a custody case if you share a child with someone else.

If you have a custody order and want to move, especially out of state, you generally can't just go. Maryland courts look at whether the move is in the child's best interest, and the other parent has a right to weigh in, sometimes to object. The earlier you raise a planned move, the more options you have, and the fewer surprises for the court.

Emergency contacts, who is allowed to pick up, who receives records. Schools go by the file in front of them. If your order changed and that file did not, the gap tends to surface on the worst possible day.

Not every bond between parent and child starts with biology or adoption, and Maryland law has caught up to that.

Under the state's "de facto parent" standard, someone who has functioned as a real parent, a stepparent, a grandparent, a former partner who helped raise a child, can ask a court for custody or visitation, even without a biological or legal tie. Courts look at whether the legal parent invited and supported that role, and whether a genuine bond between parent and child actually formed. It's a real path, but it depends heavily on the specific facts.
