Put yourself in our place. The mayor and City council won’t. This flooding is happening right now. Whiting Turner, the contractor for the City Dock has plugged up the storm drain outside of their jobsite across the street from my store which causes this flooding. I have spoken to Sarah Megee, the District Manager of the Compliance Program, Water and Science Administration for the Maryland Department of the Environment and her email response stated “MDE never requested the inlet protection outside the Limits of Disturbance (LOD). In this case, the delegated authority for this decision is the City of Annapolis.”
I have brought this matter before the City Council several times and they have done nothing. I spoke with Harry Huntley, our Ward One alderman, and he stated that it is the Mayor, Jared Littman’s decision. I spoke with the mayor about this and his three-word reply was, “that’s too bad”.
His family owns and operates Ace hardware in Bay Ridge. They have 24 parking spaces in front of their establishment. Imagine the following: Those 24 spaces were reduced by 80% to five spaces. A fence was put up to block the public’s view of the store. A sign was put up to inform their customers they could park 500 yards away at a cost of $4.00 per hour. Then add that the doorway to their hardware store would be flooded every time it rained. How long do you think they would stay in business?
Three businesses near the City Dock have already closed their doors. Three more plan to do the same in the near future. According to Whiting Turner, “It’s for the greater good.” According to Jared Littman, “That’s too bad”. Apparently the rest of the City Council feel the same way.
