๐ŸŒŸ Monthly Team Member Highlight ๐ŸŒŸ

This month, we're excited to spotlight Leticia Skrabut, Esq., Tax Attorney at Azarvand Tax Law!

Leticia represents businesses and individuals in a wide range of tax matters before the Internal Revenue Service and local taxing authorities. Her practice focuses on tax controversy and compliance, bringing focused, strategic advocacy to clients navigating matters before the IRS and local taxing authorities.

A native speaker of both Spanish and English, Leticia serves clients in both languages, a reflection of the firm's deep commitment to ensuring that language is never a barrier to quality legal representation.

Leticia earned her Juris Doctor from The George Washington University Law School, where she served as Chair of Professional Outreach for the Tax Law Society, Academic Chair of the Latin American Law Students Association, and Treasurer of the International Refugee Assistance Project, reflecting her passion for tax law, and her dedication to community service.

Prior to her admission to the bar, Leticia built a strong practical foundation through several legal roles, including as a Student Attorney in the Small Business and Community Economic Development Clinic, as a Law Clerk at a boutique tax law firm, and ultimately as a Law Clerk here at Azarvand Tax Law, where her talent and dedication made her a natural fit for the team.

What truly sets Leticia apart is her consistency and accountability, qualities that make her not only a trusted advocate for her clients, but an invaluable asset to the Azarvand Tax Law team.

We're so grateful to have Leticia's expertise, bilingual talent, and client-first approach as part of the Azarvand Tax Law family! ๐Ÿ‘

Do you hold a financial account outside the United States? ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฆ

You may have a federal reporting obligation with an often overlooked federal agency, FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network).

While foreign bank accounts are by far the most common trigger, it is important to note that the reporting requirement extends to a broad range of foreign financial accounts, such as foreign pension plans, trusts, and investment accounts.

If you are a U.S. person, including citizens, residents (such as green card holders or those meeting the substantial presence test), trusts, or domestic entity, and the aggregate value of your foreign financial accounts exceeded $10,000 at any point during the year, you are required to file with FinCEN.

That $10,000 threshold is calculated by adding up all of your covered foreign financial accounts together, across every country, not account by account.

Follw us on Instagram () for part 2, where we dig into the applicable FBAR penalties.

Are you a taxpayer impacted by Super Typhoon Sinlaku? ๐Ÿšจ

Relief is on the way, but where you live matters. Following actions by President Trump, Governor Guerrero, and Governor Apatang, both U.S. territories have relief in place, but taxpayers living in Guam are not in the same position as those living in the CNMI. The differences are significant.

Did you or someone you know receive an IRS penalty notice? ๐Ÿ“ฌ

There's a penalty relief route most people never think to ask for. It's called First Time Penalty Abatement.

If you qualify, the IRS can remove certain penalties entirely, including, but not limited to, Failure-to-File and Failure-to-Pay, without requiring you to prove hardship or explain what went wrong.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we walk through Reasonable Cause Penalty Abatement, a separate avenue that may apply when life circumstances got in the way of your tax obligations.

S-Corp owners: not paying yourself a salary, or paying yourself too little as a shareholder? Your S-Corp status may be at risk. ๐Ÿšจ

The IRS requires S-Corp shareholders to pay themselves a reasonable salary. Ignoring this rule can cost you back taxes, penalties, interest, and potentially losing your S-Corp status altogether.

Donโ€™t wait until the IRS comes knocking. Tax Attorney Leticia Skrabut, Esq. breaks down the basics of reasonable compensation.

This month, we're proud to celebrate Kristel "Kit" Barnhill, our Operations Manager and one of Azarvand Tax Law's most dedicated advocates since before the firm even existed.

Kit's connection to this firm runs deeper than a job title. Before we opened our doors, she and our Founder, Tina Azarvand, had already spent nearly two years working together professionally. When the time came, her decision to join wasn't a leap of faith; it was a genuine belief in Azarvand Tax Law's mission to make tax law more accessible, regardless of geographic or language barriers.

As an entrepreneur herself, Kit had a front-row seat to the difficulties of navigating tax matters as a business owner: the complexity, the lack of accessible representation, and the very real gaps in service for those who need it most. She understood not just what we were building, but why it mattered. She has championed that belief alongside us from day one.

Her skillset reflects the kind of versatility that only comes from years of building things yourself. Kit oversees our website operations, leads our marketing strategy, and designs the internal workflows and automation systems that keep the firm running smoothly, all while thinking like an owner, not just an operator. She has a sharp analytical mind paired with a genuine and creative range, allowing her to seamlessly move between big-picture strategy and day-to-day ex*****on with an ease that makes everything look effortless, even when it isn't.

What has remained constant throughout it all is her enthusiasm for what this firm stands for. From helping build our online presence from the ground up to refining how we communicate our mission to US taxpayers, Kit has been a true advocate of this firm and the work we do. She believes in this work, in this team, and in the clients we serve, and that belief shows up in everything she does.

Please join us in celebrating Kit and all of her hard work! ๐ŸŽ‰
