Do you have to move out before you can file for divorce in Maryland?
Not anymore.

The law changed in October 2023, and a lot of people are still working off the old rules. Today you can be "separated" while living in the same house, as long as you're living separate lives.

That matters if moving out isn't in the budget, or you don't want to leave the kids.

Just got served with divorce papers? Take a breath. Then do these four things. 👇

1️⃣ Read everything. The papers tell you what your spouse is asking for and how long you have to respond.
2️⃣ Mark your deadline. If you were served in Maryland, you generally have 30 days to file an Answer. Miss it and the court can move forward without you.
3️⃣ Don't sign or agree to anything yet. Not by text. Not at the kitchen table.
4️⃣ Start gathering paperwork: pay stubs, tax returns, bank and retirement statements.
