Hosting a Special Event with Alcohol? Here’s What South Carolina Businesses Need to Know:

Summer and fall bring countless opportunities for festivals and special events. If your organization plans to serve alcohol, it’s crucial to understand the licensing requirements:

The person or entity receiving the profits or proceeds must apply for the Special Event license — even if those proceeds are donations or entry fees.

Nonprofits must be registered and in good standing with the SC Secretary of State to qualify for a Special (Donated) Nonprofit Event Permit.

Nonprofit permit holders can accept alcohol donations, but only through a licensed SC wholesaler.

Beer & Wine and Liquor Special Event Permit holders must purchase alcohol from licensed wholesalers or retail liquor stores — donations are not permitted.

Planning an event can be complex, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Our firm can guide you through the licensing process to ensure your event is fully compliant with South Carolina law.

📢 SCDOR Alcohol License Holders — Know Your Sunday Sales Rules! 🍺🍷🍸

Are you a South Carolina business with an alcohol license from the SCDOR? 🏪 Staying compliant is key — especially when it comes to Sunday sales.

Here’s your quick guide:

🔹 Beer & Wine On-Premises Sales
✅ PBW & PO7 permits = sales allowed 7 days/week
⛔ No sales between 2–10 AM on Sundays

✅ PO7 & P7B = Sunday sales allowed, no restricted hours

🔹 Liquor On-Premises Sales
✅ LOP = Sunday sales allowed except 2–10 AM

🗺️ Reminder: 5 SC counties don’t allow Sunday sales at all (except certain cities). These include Cherokee, Sumter (City approved), Aiken (City approved), Barnwell, and Hampton.

If you operate in any of these 8 counties — Cherokee, Chester, Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Fairfield, Florence, or Horry — don’t wait to renew!

📢 Navigating Alcohol Licensure 📢

If you're starting a business involving the sale of alcohol ensuring you have the right permits and licenses is essential. Whether it's beer, wine, or liquor, here's some of what you need to know for South Carolina specifically:

1️⃣ Beer & Wine Permits: For on-premises (PBG) or off-premises (PBW) sales, make sure your location meets local approval. Counties that allow Sunday sales have specific guidelines under SC Code 61-4-510.

2️⃣ Liquor Licenses: Business or nonprofit? Choose the right permit. Restaurants or hotels need a Liquor by the Drink license (PLB), and private clubs must hold a special nonprofit liquor license (PLC).

3️⃣ Liability Insurance: If you're selling alcohol after 5 PM for on-premises consumption, South Carolina law requires a $1 million liability policy (SC Code 61-2-145). We know a real touchy spot right now here in south Carolina!

4️⃣ Brewpubs & Breweries: Specific licenses allow the production of beer on-premises for sale. Review SC Code 61-4-1740 for brewpub rules!

🔎 Need help navigating the complexities? Contact us at www.scattorneysatlaw.com to ensure you’re in compliance with South Carolina alcohol laws. FYI - We have tons of clients outside of the state of South Carolina too, so we've got your alcohol licensure needs covered if you need expert counsel!
