Hosting a Special Event with Alcohol? Here’s What South Carolina Businesses Need to Know:
Summer and fall bring countless opportunities for festivals and special events. If your organization plans to serve alcohol, it’s crucial to understand the licensing requirements:
The person or entity receiving the profits or proceeds must apply for the Special Event license — even if those proceeds are donations or entry fees.
Nonprofits must be registered and in good standing with the SC Secretary of State to qualify for a Special (Donated) Nonprofit Event Permit.
Nonprofit permit holders can accept alcohol donations, but only through a licensed SC wholesaler.
Beer & Wine and Liquor Special Event Permit holders must purchase alcohol from licensed wholesalers or retail liquor stores — donations are not permitted.
Planning an event can be complex, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Our firm can guide you through the licensing process to ensure your event is fully compliant with South Carolina law.
