For men who have lost their homes, jobs and livelihoods, the ruins of Gaza’s destroyed buildings have become a dangerous source of income.

Qassam al-Sane’e never imagined that his hands, which he once used to type on a keyboard, would one day grip a heavy sledgehammer to break through concrete.

Al-Sane’e, 35, had studied information technology at Al-Azhar University. Before Israel’s war on Gaza began in October 2023, he designed websites and provided technical support at a computer repair shop.

Now he finds himself among what remains of bombed-out homes in Khan Younis, in the south of Gaza, smashing up concrete and searching for any scraps that can be sold or reused – mainly iron, tiles and wood, but also aluminum, metal pipes and cables.

“Never, never. I never even thought for a day that I would do this kind of work,” al-Sane’e tells The Electronic Intifada.

He had chosen the field of IT as he loved the work, designing websites for clients, often in an air-conditioned room, with a cup of coffee in hand.

But he did not choose his current work, rather the war left him with little choice. After being displaced from Rafah to Khan Younis, al-Sane’e says his life changed “from A to Z.”

Having lost his computer to the war, replacing it was far beyond what he could afford, as the economy collapsed and work disappeared. Internet and electricity blackouts on top of that meant his previous work became unfeasible and the priority was finding any work that would help him feed his children.

Without access to the heavy machinery normally used to demolish the remnants of buildings, workers are forced to rely on sledgehammers, pickaxes and other basic tools to break reinforced concrete and reach whatever can still be salvaged.

The scale of the destruction surrounding these workers is enormous.
