Do you have a critical information binder to leave not only for your pets but for your children too?

I recently had a client who was having surgery and was leaving her pets in the care of some friends. She left extensive instructions about what her pets eat, what they are allergic to, who their vets are, their medical history and current issues, and any quirks they have such as a favorite toy or special sleeping place.

It dawned on me that we sometimes treat our pets better than our own children!

How many parents leave instructions like this when they leave their children in the care of another person? It doesn’t matter whether you're going out for the evening and leaving your children with a babysitter or going away for a week and leaving your children with their grandparents, it's a good idea to keep a binder handy with all of the important information.

But what should you put in the binder?

I hear the first sentence from my clients all the time and I often reply with the second. Trusts are a tremendous asset and something that can protect ourselves and our loved ones, but it comes with caveats. What many people do not understand is that there is no one-size-fits-all option. This is because we all have our own unique needs, especially when it comes to estate and long-term care planning.

While some may not need a trust, others may need one for long-term care planning, tax planning, caring for an individual with special needs, or for protecting a child’s inheritance from creditors or even the child themselves.

It all depends on your specific needs at certain points in your life.

“I’m all set, I have a trust,” reply is followed by a discussion on the differences between revocable and irrevocable trusts

I’ve written a lot of these blogs in the past and I always begin with the same phrase, “I know it’s not an easy thing to think of, but …” and yes, this is going to be one of those blogs. One of the most important things that you can do for your family is to make sure that all of your documents are in order. That means your John or Jane Hancock has to be there, otherwise, the people you leave behind will have a lot of red tape to cut through.

Want to Give, But Not Sure Which Charity to Choose?

As the world has changed over the last few months due to renewed social action and the harsh realities of a global pandemic, many of my clients have decided to name a charity as a beneficiary in their will.

For example, a client came to me last week and was confused about how to go about safely giving some of his wealth to charity. “I really want to leave some of my assets to a charity,” he said. “But I don’t know which one I should choose.”

This problem is a lot more common than you may think. Charities are oftentimes labyrinthian fields of red tape and bureaucracy where funds might not reach the people that you want it to. So you might think that your money is going to one place, but it could be used to pay for something else.

In addition to being indecisive on which charity to choose my client was worried about precisely that mismanagement.

3 Ways to Approach Estate Planning and Minimize Family Conflict
Jon received the phone call about his father’s death from a distant relative. The news hit hard, not only because of the loss but because of how he found out. Why hadn’t his sister called him? Sure, he and their father had their issues—they hadn’t spoken in years. But it was still his father. He felt hurt and angry, realizing just how much he had been left in the dark. Not only had no one told him about his father’s illness and hospice care, but he hadn’t even known about the funeral until it was over. The service, the chance to say goodbye, had all passed him by.
But Jon was determined this wouldn’t be the end of things. He was still entitled to know what was in his father’s will, just as much as his sister. This was his family and his legacy too. With a sense of determination and lingering resentment, Jon set out to discover his rightful place in his father’s estate plan.
