When I met with them they hadn't taken what they wanted out of the house yet, so they asked for a 30-day close. That's the date we put on paper, and that's the day it closed. Thursday night is the Amarillo Choice Awards, and Haley is on the ballot twice: Real Estate Agent, and her brokerage, 2015 Real Estate, for Residential Real Estate Company. Her page is Haley Sutter, Amarillo Realtor.

This is the two of us at last year's, next to the ice sculpture. She was a nominee then too.

Most of what people see of Haley is the finished part. The listing that looks easy. The deal that closed on time. What they don't see is her phone going at every hour, the showings she rearranged her whole day for, the clients she stayed on top of long after the paperwork was done. I live with that, and I still don't know how she does all of it.

She didn't get on that ballot by accident. She got there one client at a time, and every one of them has a story about her showing up. Amarillo voting her among the best is just Amarillo noticing what I get to see every day.

Thursday I'm going to sit next to her and be as proud as a husband can be. Win or not, she already earned the seat.

This is what a rental looks like when the tenants stop paying and the landlord is done. Months without rent, an eviction, and this is what got left behind. Junk everywhere, a rotted spot in the subfloor, carpet that all comes out.

This one gets rehabbed and sold to pay for what goes on the land next to it. Land that's never been used gets a couple of homes on it and becomes a nice spot for somebody. Whether I sell those or keep them as rentals, I haven't decided.
