Virginia notaries can perform the following acts:
•Take acknowledgments
•Administer oaths and affirmations
•Certify copies of documents
•Certify affidavits or depositions
•Verify facts
•Notarize powers of attorney
•Notarize wills
•Notarize a child's signature
Virginia notaries can perform these acts anywhere in Virginia, and can also perform them outside the state if they follow the chapter. However, their powers are limited outside of Virginia, and they can only perform notarial acts for writings that will be used in Virginia or by the US government.
Virginia notaries are NOT authorized to certify true copies of:
•Birth
•Death
•Marriage certificates.
These documents must be issued from the Virginia Department of Health or the local Department of Motor Vehicles.
