An insurance company mailed the forms. The client did the right thing and sent us a photo of every page before touching a pen.

Here is the reply, word for word, translated from Spanish: Please don't sign or complete any of their forms yet. We are reviewing them.

That is the whole rule. A form from an insurance company is never just a form. It is a statement, a permission slip, or a signature with a paragraph above it that somebody drafted on purpose. Some are harmless. Some hand your entire medical history to the people deciding your claim.

You cannot tell which is which from the kitchen table. We can, and it takes about a day.

So take the photo, send it over, and leave the pen where it is.

Nobody stays late for this. That is the point of it.

Overnight, a program we built walks through every open case in the office and asks a short list of boring questions. There is a trial date — are the deadlines that hang off it on the calendar? The other side served questions — is there a date to answer them? Something is supposed to expire soon — does anyone know?

It does not fix anything. It is not allowed to. It makes a list, and a person reads the list in the morning.

Most mornings the list is empty, which is the correct amount of excitement for a law office calendar.

The mistakes that hurt clients are rarely dramatic. They are a date that never got written down. So we built something whose only job is to go looking for the date that is not there.

Locals know the secret: the best beach month in Orange County is the one after everyone leaves.

The water is still warm, there is parking in Laguna again, and half the county drives down after work to catch the last hour of light. Which means the busiest time to be on foot along PCH is now the dimmest — people in dark sweatshirts carrying chairs across four lanes right as the sun drops.

One useful fact: in California a crosswalk generally exists at an intersection whether or not anybody painted one. The person stepping off the corner at an unmarked cross street is, as a rule, in a crosswalk.

Through Laguna, Dana Point, and Corona del Mar, the fix is dull: headlights on early, and assume every corner has somebody about to step off it.

Then go find that parking spot. It is a very good month.

The instinct makes sense: he hit me, so his insurance should cover the doctor. Eventually, maybe. But the other driver's insurer does not pay bills as they arrive. If it pays, it pays once, at the very end, after the treatment is finished and the arguing is done.

Your neck is on a different schedule. One thing is true: you have to get medical treatment right away. Health insurance is how most people do that without waiting on anybody's permission.

Yes, your health plan may ask to be paid back out of whatever you recover later. That is normal, it gets sorted out at the end, and it is not a reason to sit home with an ice pack for a month.

Go get looked at. Hand them your insurance card like it was any other Tuesday.

A composite, built from more than one file, with the details changed. The expired video is the part that keeps happening.

There are cameras on nearly every block now. Doorbells, gas stations, the dry cleaner, the city bus. After a crash, one of them very often saw the light, the lane, and the whole disagreement.

Almost none of them keep it. The recording loops, and the new week gets saved on top of the old one. Nobody deletes anything. It just quietly stops existing.

People who are hurt spend those first weeks on doctors and a rental car, as they should. So this is the job to hand off. Tell whoever is helping you where it happened and what was pointed at it, and let them go knock.

Most neighbors say yes. They just need to be asked while there is still something to hand over.

An adjuster is usually carrying far more open files than any one person should. The phone tree is not a plot. It is what a queue sounds like from the outside.

Here is the straight part. When you are hurt and the person with the answers is behind a recording, the waiting starts to feel like the answer. It is not.

Two small habits help. On the very first call, ask for the adjuster's direct line, their email, and the claim number, and write all three down. After that, put anything that matters in an email. A phone call evaporates. An email has a time on it.

We still call. We just bring a book.

Handing over the keys feels like lending a car. On paper it is closer to lending a policy.

In California, auto coverage generally follows the vehicle. When someone drives your car with your permission and causes a crash, your policy is usually the first one asked to answer for it. Whatever coverage the driver carries typically sits behind yours.

There are wrinkles. Some policies name excluded drivers, usually a household member the company declined to cover, and an excluded driver behind the wheel is a very different conversation.

So the homework is small. Pull up your declarations page. See who is listed, see whether anyone is excluded, and think for a second about who borrows the car.

Then go ahead and be the friend with the truck.

A lot of this office is automated. Documents get named and filed on their own. Phone calls write themselves into the client file, untouched by a keyboard. Deadlines get calendared the day a date is set.

All of it exists for one reason, and it is not speed. It is so the hours the machinery gives back go into the part no machine does: reading the file, thinking about the case, and picking up the phone.

The rule sitting on top has not moved since the doors opened. Nothing goes out of here that a lawyer has not read start to finish. Not a letter, not a demand, not an email to an adjuster.

Serious equipment, and one set of human eyes on everything that carries the name.

Every year the first real rain arrives and the county drives like it is still August.

The reason it is slick has nothing to do with how hard it comes down. A long dry stretch leaves a film of oil and rubber on the road, and the first water lifts that film instead of washing it off. Light rain after a long drought is the worst version of it, not the mildest.

The places it shows up here are predictable: the painted lines and metal plates downtown, the on-ramps where everyone brakes in the same twenty feet, and the canyon roads where the camber sends water across the lane instead of off it.

Nothing exotic required. Twice the following distance, headlights on, and no cruise control until the road has had an hour to rinse.

Then it is genuinely lovely out.

Parents ask this one at midnight, usually from a hospital parking lot, and the confusion is understandable.

A kid on a bike is not a vehicle in a traffic sense, but a person hurt by a car is a person hurt by a car. The driver's liability coverage is the coverage that has to answer, exactly as it would for another driver.

If that driver has none, or nowhere near enough, the uninsured and underinsured motorist portion of the family car policy can reach a household member who was riding or walking. Most parents have no idea their coverage follows a kid onto a bicycle.

Helmet questions come up. Whether one was on can become an argument about the injury, and it does not erase what happened or who caused it.

One practical thing, and it gets missed constantly: keep the bike. Do not repair it, do not toss it in the side yard, do not let a shop scrap it. Photograph it from every angle first. That bent frame is the only piece of physical evidence that does not heal.
