When courts decide custody, one question guides everything: what's actually best for the child?

In Virginia, judges weigh 10 specific factors — from each parent's relationship with the child to caregiving history to a child's own preference (when they're old enough to express it). No single factor automatically wins the case.

A few things that often surprise parents:
✅ Mothers don't automatically get custody — Virginia law is gender-neutral
✅ Kids can't just choose where they live, even as teens
✅ Income doesn't decide custody — parenting capacity does
✅ Courts value consistency and documented involvement over last-minute effort

Understanding how the "best interests of the child" standard works can help you prepare — and put your best foot forward — before you ever step into a courtroom.

One year ago, we opened our doors with a simple goal: to provide our clients with thoughtful, dedicated legal counsel they could truly rely on.

Today, we mark our first anniversary — and it's our clients, colleagues, and community who deserve the credit.

This past year has reinforced what we believe at our core — that great legal work is built on relationships, integrity, and a genuine commitment to the people we serve.

We're grateful for everything year one has taught us, and energized for what's ahead. Here's to many more years of serving our clients and community with the same care and dedication.
Thank you for being part of our story.

Can a judge order you back to work in a divorce? ⚖️

Not exactly — but it's more complicated than it sounds.

Virginia courts can't force you to take a specific job. But they can calculate your support obligations based on "imputed income" — what a judge believes you're capable of earning, not just what you actually make.

This often comes up when a spouse appears to be:
🔍 Intentionally unemployed or underemployed
🔍 Working below their skills or experience level
🔍 Quitting a job right before or during the divorce

Legitimate reasons — like caregiving for a young child, health conditions, or an active job search — can serve as a defense. Documentation is everything.

Imputed income can affect both child support and spousal support, so it's worth understanding before you make any employment decisions.

You've filed for divorce in Virginia — what happens next? ⚖️

Filing is just the first step. Here's a quick look at the road ahead:

📄 Your spouse is served and has 21 days to respond
⚖️ Temporary orders can address custody, support, or the marital home while the case is pending
🔍 Discovery — both sides exchange financial records, answer questions under oath, and more
🤝 Most cases settle through negotiation or mediation rather than trial
📝 A Final Order for Divorce legally ends the marriage and outlines custody, support, and property terms

Knowing what's ahead can make a hard process feel more manageable.
