Police received a call reporting that a person had been found injured on the side of the road, apparently beaten and left there.

But when officers arrived, something about the story didn't add up.
They took a closer look at the caller's own vehicle and noticed damage that was surprisingly consistent with the victim's injuries and the evidence at the scene.

Real case, we couldn't make this stuff up if we tried.

Sometimes the at-fault driver's insurance isn't enough to cover the full impact of the injuries, and the claim has to turn to the injured person's own insurance to help fill the gap.

Pedestrian Safety Month could not have come at a more fitting time for Northern Virginia. It has been a terrible few months for pedestrian injuries and deaths across our region, and each one is a reminder of how vulnerable people are when sharing the road with vehicles.

As drivers, a few extra seconds of attention can make a difference. Slow down. Look carefully before turning. Yield to people in crosswalks. Put distractions away and stay alert behind the wheel. We all have somewhere to be. Let’s help make sure everyone gets there safely.

The moment you step out of your vehicle, you become a pedestrian. 🚶‍➡️

For October's National Pedestrian Safety Month, we're reminding everyone that safety is a 2-way street:

👁️ Drivers: Scan crosswalks and stay focused — put the phone away.
👟 Pedestrians: Stay visible, use crosswalks and look both ways before stepping off the curb.

Virginia recognizes a medical emergency defense when a driver is suddenly struck by an illness they had no reason to anticipate and it becomes impossible for them to control their vehicle. But the key question is often: Was it truly sudden and unforeseeable?

If there is evidence the driver knew, or should have known, that a medical condition could affect their ability to drive, the defense may not apply. That means a medical emergency claim can be investigated. An attorney may look at the circumstances leading up to the crash, prior warning signs, available records, witness statements, and other evidence to determine what actually happened.

Right around this time 25 years ago, the federal government introduced the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Created just 11 days after the attacks, the Fund offered families something many desperately needed: certainty. Rather than spending years in litigation trying to prove fault, families could pursue compensation through a faster, more direct process.

The program was not without controversy. Questions were raised about how compensation was calculated and whether any formula could truly measure a life. But for more than 98% of eligible families who lost loved ones, the Fund provided a path forward outside the courtroom.
Founding Partner Thomas J. Curcio was among the thousands of lawyers who volunteered to help families navigate the process, representing five local Pentagon families at no charge.

Years later, the Fund was reopened to cover those suffering from 9/11-related illnesses and is now authorized through October 1, 2090.
