Adult drug courts are an alternative to incarceration that combine public health and public safety approaches to connect people involved in the justice system with individualized, evidence-based treatment and recovery support services. Adult drug courts are the most carefully studied and well-proven intervention in our nation’s history for leading people with substance use disorders out of the justice system and into lives of health and recovery.

Extensive research shows adult drug courts are most successful with populations at high risk for committing new crimes or otherwise being unsuccessful under regular probation, and who have a high need for treatment and other recovery support services, but are unlikely to voluntarily continue these services long enough to benefit.

What is a Drug Court you may ask?

A Drug Court is an intensive problem-solving court program that targets persons in the criminal justice system who are physically dependent upon drugs and/or alcohol. Participants voluntarily consent to participate in the program which provides them with a full continuum of substance use disorder treatment services in order to successfully achieve and maintain sobriety. A multi-disciplinary team of clinical and justice professionals closely supervise each participant’s compliance with treatment and probation supervision requirements and hold them accountable through frequent court appearances, random and frequent drug testing, and intensive probation supervision.

With that being said, today’s Drug Court looked a little different than the usual. The MCDC Team and members from all over the community (including other Drug Courts, attorneys, judges, etc) got together to celebrate a special young man.

I am proud to announce that MCDC has its FIRST EVER program graduate! On behalf of the entire MCDC Team, I would like to thank everyone who came out to support the Mercer County Drug Court Program’s FIRST graduate.
