If you have ever driven Interstate 65 through the heart of Alabama in the summertime, you know the joy of pulling over at a roadside peach stand in Chilton County. For generations, Clanton has been famous as the peach capital of Alabama, and Peach Park has been a beloved stop for travelers and locals alike.
The tables overflow with baskets of ripe, fragrant peaches picked fresh from the surrounding orchards. The sweet smell alone is enough to make you roll down your window. Beyond the peaches, folks come for homemade peach ice cream, fried pies, boiled peanuts, and cold cider on a hot afternoon.
There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about it all. Families stretch their legs, children run between the crates, and everyone leaves with a sack of the sweetest fruit the good Lord ever grew. It is the kind of simple pleasure that has stayed the same for decades while the world rushed by on the highway.
For many Alabamians, a summer road trip is not complete without a stop for Chilton County peaches. It is a taste of home and a reminder of slower, sweeter days.
