The NFL passing yards record goes back to 1951, where Norm Van Brocklin, in front of 30K fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum, threw for 554 yards in a win over the New York Yanks 54-14. The next closest QBs on the list are Matt Schaub (2012) and warren Moon (1990) who each had 527 yards passing in a game. Anyone here attend this game?

On August 24, 1919, Indians pitcher Ray Caldwell was STRUCK BY LIGHTNING on the field in the middle of the 9th inning, recovered and got back up, then got the final out of the game for the win.

Caldwell’s contract intentionally required him to go out and drink after a game he pitched, sleep it off the next day and report back to the team the following day to prep for his next start. That’s because he became known for “outbreaks of misbehavior” over his desire to party, so the Indians made sure he got it all out of his system after each game he played.

Good day to have a drink after work.

Caldwell also threw a no-hitter just a few weeks later. He went 5-1 with a 1.71 ERA for Cleveland that season in 6 starts after he was traded to the Indians.

If this story is not “100+ years ago” enough for you, another fun fact about Caldwell: He was one of 17 pitchers allowed to continue throwing the spitball after it was outlawed in 1920.
