Dear Clients and Friends of the Firm,
We are writing to share some exciting news and reaffirm our commitment to serving the legal needs of individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations for many years to come. Beginning April 1, 2019, Ndagire, Odeke & Kabweru will be Ridgeline Advocates. We are adopting this new name following the departure of our long-time colleague and friend. Our new name and logo reflect our growth over the last 4 years and our success as a national firm. What began as a practice primarily serving the Kampala market in criminal matters four years ago now includes a sophisticated disputes practice for insurance, financial, insolvency and commercial litigation clients in the other parts of the country.
We are proud to highlight the service and expertise that makes our firm distinctive by refreshing our brand. We understand that many law firms carry on with the same name for generations to signal continuity and stability. But all too often the continuity and stability at those large, international firms starts and ends with the name.
Once past the name, there is a tangled web of associates and practice groups that come and go and share little with the firm’s founders or its original values. That is not our vision. We have worked together for over 5 years. We have been together through the boutique bubble, the period of massive growth and consolidation and then the collapse of many leveraged firms.
During that time we have come to understand that clients today are not looking for a bureaucracy or a brand name, but rather for direct access to experienced hands-on litigators who trust their own judgment and each other, for experienced lawyers who will be there when cases start and when they finish. We remain committed to working together and delivering on that promise. It has always been our goal to foster a firm culture based on traditional professional values.
We practice law in a setting where trust, personal care and excellence define success for our clients and ourselves. In service to our clients, we will continue to provide a more meaningful level of continuity and stability than can be found with most of our peers. As founding partners, we will ensure that Ridgeline Advocates continues to demonstrate commitment to our clients, our values and each other, every day. The new company name will naturally be reflected on all company stationery and media with effect from April 1st 2019.

Legal statements of NOK ASSOCIATES.

1. Ethics and professional standards policy.

NOK ASSOCIATES is committed to the highest ethical and professional standards. These apply to all our people, regardless of role. NOK Associates people are required to act professionally and in compliance with relevant laws, regulations and Bar rules.
These ethical and professional standards include:

acting with integrity, professionalism and fairness

acting in the best interests of each client, including providing a proper standard of service to our clients

upholding the rule of law and the proper administration of justice
behaving in a way that maintains the trust the public has in the provision of legal services

maintaining our independence

The Firm has internal policies intended to help its people comply with these standards and with relevant laws and regulations.

2. Anti-corruption statement.

NOK ASSOCIATES has a zero tolerance policy towards bribery and corruption. We are committed to:

conducting business in a manner that complies with applicable laws and is consistent with the highest ethical standards including, among other things, standards intended to prevent bribery and corruption, and
using our best endeavours to ensure that those who perform services for and on behalf of NOK Associates including employees, contractors, foreign counsel and agents – are aware of and share our commitment to conducting business ethically.

The Firm is subject to the Anti Corruption Act of the Laws of Uganda in respect of its activities throughout the country and has adopted an Anti-Corruption Policy, which has been endorsed by its senior management. The policy is based on an assessment by NOK Associates of the external and internal bribery risks that face us, and reflects fundamental standards that NOK Associates expects from those who perform services for us and on our behalf to abide by when acting on our behalf.

NOK Associates will not use third parties or intermediaries to engage on its behalf in unethical practices that would be prohibited under any applicable laws if undertaken by NOK Associates.

NOK Associates expects that all third parties and intermediaries that it engages will conduct themselves accordingly when acting on behalf or for the benefit of NOK Associates.

NOK Associates is committed to transparency on its ethical standards and anti-bribery initiatives and has established procedures that are described in our Anti-Corruption Policy to encourage employees to report instances or allegations of policy violations.

3. Human rights.

The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights which were unanimously endorsed by the Human Rights Council in 2011 state that all business enterprises have a responsibility to respect human rights.

As a firm we have agreed to support and respect internationally and natoinally recognised human rights, both as part of our commitment to the UN Global Compact and consistent with the UN Guiding Principles.

4. Complaints procedure.
NOK Associates is committed to providing its clients with commercially focused legal advice of the highest quality. Any client who is unhappy about the advice and assistance that it receives from the Firm, including any concerns about a bill, is entitled to complain.
