— — Grave concerns are mounting over the fate of three citizens from Alexandria Governorate, following the complete loss of contact with them since the early hours of Tuesday, 19 May 2026, in the wake of a security operation targeting residential properties belonging to their families in the Moharam Bek district, after which they were taken to an undisclosed location.
According to available information, security forces raided several apartments owned by the family, conducting searches, destroying a number of their contents, and seizing electronic devices, documents, and personal belongings, before arresting the following individuals:
⬅️ Hassan Al-Shazly
⬅️ Saber Mohamed Eid Hassan Al-Shazly
⬅️ Eid Al-Shazly
Since the moment of their arrest, their families have been unable to determine their whereabouts or establish any contact with them. Their legal counsel has likewise been denied access and has been unable to ascertain their legal status, in the complete absence of any official information regarding the grounds for their detention.
The continuation of their isolation from the outside world raises serious concerns regarding their possible subjection to enforced disappearance and the attendant violations, particularly given their deprivation of the most basic legal guarantees afforded to any person upon arrest.
🛑 Justice for Human Rights Organization (JHR) condemns the enforced disappearance of the three citizens — Hassan Al-Shazly, Saber Mohamed Eid Hassan Al-Shazly, and Eid Al-Shazly — and holds the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for their safety and wellbeing.
🛑 JHR demands the immediate disclosure of their places of detention, the restoration of their right to communicate with their families and legal counsel, and their referral to a competent investigative authority should any charges exist — affirming that enforced disappearance constitutes a grave violation of the Egyptian Constitution and international covenants, and a crime that is not subject to any statute of limitations.

— The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, has warned of a sharp escalation in conflict-related sexual violence crimes during 2025, confirming that documented cases have doubled compared to the preceding year.
The seventeenth annual report of the UN Secretary-General revealed the documentation of 9,788 confirmed cases of conflict-related sexual violence across 21 affected countries, with the caveat that actual figures may be considerably higher due to the difficulty of accessing conflict zones, security restrictions, and the risks of reprisal faced by survivors.
The report noted that 77 parties have been listed as alleged perpetrators of violations, including both state and non-state actors, with new parties added during the current year.
With regard to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, the report indicated that Israeli armed and security forces have been listed on the basis of what the United Nations described as credible information concerning patterns of sexual violence against Palestinians, including violations that occurred inside detention centers, during military operations, and at checkpoints.
The United Nations also documented patterns of sexual violence in other conflict settings, including Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Myanmar, Libya, and Yemen.
Patten affirmed that sexual violence is being increasingly deployed as a tactic of war, an instrument of torture, and a means of intimidation and control, calling upon the international community to place the rights, dignity, and needs of victims and survivors at the forefront of any international response.
Justice for Human Rights Organization (JHR) affirms that crimes of sexual violence in conflict constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law, and stresses the imperative of ensuring accountability, ending impunity, and protecting victims and survivors without discrimination.

— Young Man from Kafr El-Sheikh Detained After Being Lured Under the Pretext of Obtaining a Permit for His Wedding Celebration
National Security personnel have arrested Abdullah Mohamed Al-Sayed Ali Awad Al-Atrabi, 27 years of age, from the village of Al-Saada in the Metoubes district of Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, after he was lured to a security premises under the pretext of obtaining a permit for his upcoming wedding celebration.
According to available information, Abdullah holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Physics and Chemistry from Al-Azhar University, and is employed at a mobile phone shop in Sadat City, Menoufia Governorate.
Information indicates that on 29 May 2026, he received a notification through an informant instructing him to present himself to a security facility to obtain a permit in connection with his wedding, which had been scheduled to take place the following day — prompting him to comply voluntarily.
Upon his arrival, he was immediately detained and informed that he was wanted by security authorities, before being subsequently referred to the Public Prosecution, which ordered his pre-trial detention for 15 days pending investigation.
The incident raises serious questions regarding the use of entrapment methods in carrying out arrests — particularly when such methods are linked to personal occasions and significant life events, including wedding arrangements.
🛑 Justice for Human Rights Organization (JHR) condemns the arrest of Abdullah Al-Atrabi by these means, and affirms that respect for legal procedures and constitutional guarantees is a fundamental prerequisite for any measure affecting the liberty of individuals.
🛑 JHR further demands his immediate release, the guarantee of his full legal rights, and an end to practices that may lead to arbitrary detention or the infringement of citizens' rights as protected by law.

— The family of detainee Sherine Shawqi Ahmed has disclosed a marked deterioration in her physical and psychological condition inside Tenth of October Prison, amid what they described as continued medical neglect and poor detention conditions, following a recent visit the family was permitted to conduct.

According to the family's account, Sherine suffers from several chronic health conditions, including liver and heart disease, as well as a tumor for which she requires ongoing treatment and periodic medical monitoring. The family confirmed that she had not been transferred to the medical center for a prolonged period, despite her need for regular care and follow-up — a situation that has had a direct negative impact on her health and resulted in a visible deterioration in her physical condition.
The family further stated that during the most recent visit, Sherine appeared in a state of severe exhaustion and evident psychological distress, noting that her children left the visit in a state of shock and devastation upon witnessing the extent to which her condition had declined.
In the same context, the family raised serious concerns regarding detention conditions inside Rehabilitation Ward 4 at Tenth of October Prison, indicating that criminal inmates are held in the same cells as detainees held on political grounds — a situation which, according to their account, gives rise to persistent tensions and mounting psychological pressure on the political detainees.
The family also reported recurring complaints regarding the management of certain daily services within the ward by criminal inmates, and the friction and harassment that result therefrom, adversely affecting the conditions of the detainees.
They further described what they characterized as threats of disciplinary measures against detainees who file complaints or raise objections regarding their treatment inside the facility.
JHR affirms that the denial of necessary healthcare to detainees, or undue delay in its provision, constitutes a violation of the right to health and physical integrity, and places the authorities responsible for places of detention in direct confrontation with their legal and humanitarian obligations.
🛑 JHR demands:
⬅️ The urgent transfer of Sherine Shawqi to a specialized medical facility for the necessary examinations and appropriate treatment.
⬅️ Unimpeded and timely access to periodic medical care without restriction or delay.
⬅️ The opening of a serious investigation into complaints concerning detention conditions and treatment inside Rehabilitation Ward 4.
⬅️ The guarantee of a detention environment that upholds human dignity and preserves the fundamental rights of all detainees.
⬅️ Regular access for the family to receive reliable updates on her health condition.
🛑 JHR further stresses that the protection of the life and safety of detainees is a legal obligation that admits of no derogation under any circumstances, and that any negligence in the provision of necessary medical care may expose detainees to grave risks whose consequences cannot be remedied after the fact.

— The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip has announced that the total number of casualties since the commencement of military operations in October 2023 has risen to 72,938 killed and 172,919 injured, amid the continuing fallout of the war and the severe deterioration of humanitarian conditions across the Strip.
According to the statistical report issued by the Ministry, hospitals received additional killed and wounded during the preceding forty-eight hours, while a number of victims remain trapped beneath the rubble or in areas rendered inaccessible due to security conditions and widespread destruction.
The Ministry further indicated that casualties continue to result from reported violations of the ceasefire agreement, with the toll of killed and wounded since the agreement came into effect rising to hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries, amid ongoing violence and the continued targeting of civilian areas.
These developments unfold against the backdrop of a deepening humanitarian crisis afflicting the population of the Strip, with infrastructure continuing to be destroyed, essential services deteriorating, and the humanitarian and healthcare needs of the civilian population steadily mounting.
International and United Nations organizations continue to issue urgent warnings regarding the severity of conditions in Gaza, calling for the protection of civilians and the guarantee of unimpeded humanitarian aid access, as threats to the lives of the population persist.
Justice for Human Rights Organization (JHR) condemns the continued killing of civilians in the Gaza Strip and affirms that the rising toll of dead and wounded reflects the full magnitude of the human tragedy and the grave violations to which the civilian population is being subjected. JHR stresses the imperative of compliance with the rules of international humanitarian law and the guarantee of protection for civilians and civilian infrastructure from targeting. JHR further notes that the continuation of violence and the obstruction of safe access for victims and rescue teams compounds the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe and deepens the suffering of the population. JHR calls upon the international community to take urgent action to halt these violations, ensure the delivery of humanitarian and relief assistance, conduct independent investigations, and hold accountable all those responsible for violations committed against civilians.

— A number of Palestinian civilians, among them children, have been killed in an airstrike that targeted a residential building in Gaza City, according to medical and emergency sources, amid the continuation of military operations striking densely populated civilian areas.

Reports indicate that the strike targeted a residential apartment within an occupied building surrounded by displacement tents, resulting in fatalities and casualties — including children — as well as injuries described as critical.
This incident comes in the context of ongoing airstrikes and military operations across the Gaza Strip, despite months having elapsed since the announcement of a ceasefire, as civilian casualties continue to mount and residential areas and infrastructure sustain further devastation.

Available data further points to the continued targeting of areas densely populated with civilians, including residential neighborhoods and displacement zones — a pattern that compounds the humanitarian risks and drives up the toll of civilian victims.

Amid the ongoing escalation, human rights concerns are intensifying regarding compliance with the rules of international humanitarian law, particularly those pertaining to the protection of civilians and children during armed conflict.

— With each passing day, the gap widens between the letter of the law and the reality of rights and freedoms.

Thousands of families continue to bear the consequences of prolonged detention, extended pre-trial imprisonment, denial of visitation rights, and the recycling of detainees into new cases — a reality that reflects a profound crisis in the guarantees of justice and the rule of law.
Fundamental rights must not be made subject to political considerations, nor suspended under any pretext whatsoever. Liberty, the right to a fair trial, human dignity, and the right of every individual to communicate with their family are not privileges to be granted — they are inherent rights enshrined in constitutions and international covenants alike.
The continued detention of individuals for years without just legal resolution, or under exceptional procedures, does not affect detainees alone — it leaves a profound mark on society as a whole and fundamentally erodes public confidence in the justice system.
🛑 Justice for Human Rights Organization (JHR) affirms that respect for human rights is not contingent upon circumstance or occasion — it is a permanent legal and moral obligation. It begins with guaranteeing personal liberty and extends to ensuring humane conditions of detention, independent judicial oversight, and a justice system that is never weaponized as an instrument of punishment or exclusion.
🛑 JHR demands:
The immediate release of all political detainees held on account of opinion and peaceful expression.
An end to prolonged pre-trial detention and its systematic use beyond its lawful purpose.
A halt to the practice of recycling detainees into successive new cases upon the conclusion of prior proceedings.
The full realization of detainees' legal and humanitarian rights, including visitation rights and access to healthcare.
The strengthening of judicial independence and fair trial guarantees in accordance with international standards.
True justice is not measured by the number of verdicts rendered —
but by the law's capacity to protect the human being.

— Egyptian national Mariam Mohamed Abdel Basit, 31 years of age, faces the threat of forced deportation to Egypt following her detention inside a hospital in the Sultanate of Oman after giving birth, in an incident that has raised serious human rights concerns regarding the safety of both mother and newborn child.

Mariam, who has been residing in the Sultanate of Oman since 2021, has been placed under severe restrictions inside the Medical City Hospital for Armed Forces since 25 May 2026, effectively prevented from leaving the hospital or moving freely — with no judicial order or clear legal basis declared to justify her detention.
These developments come weeks after the deportation of her husband, Ahmed Moussa, to Egypt on 9 April 2026, following his arrest inside Oman, after which all news of him ceased upon his arrival, amid growing concerns that he may have been subjected to enforced disappearance.
At an earlier stage, Mariam was prevented from travelling through Muscat Airport and was verbally informed of Interpol-related proceedings, without being granted access to official documentation or the ability to legally challenge those proceedings.
Mariam also faces charges under Case No. 1871 of 2026, including allegations of "spreading false news," "incitement to unlawful assembly," and "membership in a terrorist organization" — charges stemming from her peaceful political activity online and her administration of opposition pages on social media platforms.
In recent weeks, she has additionally been subjected to campaigns of online threats and defamation, including incitement messages and harmful content targeting her directly, raising further concerns for her personal security.
🛑 Justice for Human Rights Organization (JHR) considers that the continued post-partum detention of Mariam, and the restriction of her freedom of movement in the absence of transparent judicial proceedings, constitutes a flagrant violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under international law — particularly in light of the prospect of her forcible return to Egypt.
🛑 JHR calls upon the Omani authorities to immediately release Mariam Abdel Basit, to halt any steps that may lead to her deportation, to guarantee her full legal and humanitarian protection, and to allow her unrestricted freedom of movement and travel.

— Detainee Mohamed Mokhtar Shalal (58 years old), from the village of Al-Rahmanah in the Faraskour district of Damietta Governorate, has died inside Gamasa Prison following a severe deterioration in his health condition — just months before his scheduled release in 2026.

The deceased had been in detention since 2019, serving a seven-year prison sentence. During the years of his incarceration, he developed a liver disease, which progressively worsened until he lost his ability to move and became dependent on a wheelchair inside his cell.
This death once again brings into sharp focus the conditions faced by seriously ill detainees in places of detention — particularly in cases requiring continuous medical monitoring and specialized healthcare — amid a recurring pattern of deaths among sick and elderly prisoners.
It is further noted that his son, Mokhtar Mohamed Mokhtar, remains detained alongside him inside Gamasa Prison.
🛑 Justice for Human Rights Organization (JHR) affirms that the continued detention of individuals suffering from chronic conditions, without the provision of adequate medical care or appropriate therapeutic intervention, gives rise to grave legal and humanitarian responsibility — most acutely when such suffering culminates in the death of a detainee inside his cell.
🛑 JHR demands:
▪️ The opening of an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the death and the standard of medical care provided to the deceased.
▪️ Full disclosure regarding whether he received the necessary treatment and periodic medical examinations throughout the period of his illness.
▪️ A comprehensive review of the conditions of sick detainees across prison facilities, with particular attention to critical cases and elderly inmates.
▪️ Broader application of compassionate medical release for cases requiring specialized healthcare.
🛑 JHR further stresses that the denial of healthcare to a detainee, or undue delay in its provision, does not constitute a mere administrative failing — it may give rise to direct legal responsibility for the consequences thereof, foremost among which is the right to life.
