Guided by 14 senior TSMP lawyers as judges, 67 NUS law students joined the firm – mostly in person and some over Zoom – at its second annual Moot & Mingle to practise their advocacy skills at a mock moot last month. With the safe management measures in place, 11 of the judges then took the students in groups of four for dinner at different restaurants to enjoy some TGIF conversations whilst getting to know each other better, celebrating a well-deserved end of the work week. Many of the students displayed advocacy and analytical skills beyond their years and the judges had an excellent time mingling with them after!

Pro bono work isn't as glamorous as fighting billion-dollar commercial disputes, yet there is something satisfying about being able to provide access to justice to people who otherwise cannot afford it. At TSMP, we are proud that each lawyer has dedicated at least 25 hours of their time a year to pro bono work. Last Friday, a team consisting of TSMP employment lawyers Cathy Pereira and Stephanie Sim successfully persuaded the Courts withdraw r**e charges from a man, now 20, who was 12 or 13 when he allegedly did the act.

He was released from custody after being in remand for about 11 months. . Read more at straitstimes.com.

Fun with flashcards at a personal branding and marketing workship for senior associates and associate directors conducted by Stefanie Yuen Thio. Each lawyer picked out cards that spoke to them personally, as well as those they believe represented what their clients thought of them. By using pictures instead of words, the lawyers had to consider more deeply about how they can bridge the gap between perception and reality.

A fun collaboration with migrant worker initiative ItsRainingRaincoats and media entertainment and content company MM2 Entertainment Singapore that saw TSMP lawyers act as hawkers, commuters and even a recalcitrant anti-masker (who eventually saw the light). Under our Handprint community service umbrella, the welfare of migrant workers is one of three causes we support, together with that of vulnerable youths and the elderly.

It's been a while since we were able to hold such interactive Handprint events for our beneficiaries. Many thanks NVPC - Towards a City of Good for the shout out for this event we held with the Tembusu Senior Activity Centre in late 2019, where we shared how to prepare for end-of-life legal issues with the elderly, accompanied by games and food. For 2021, the team is planning for new community initiatives that will build in appropriate measures to keep our volunteers and our beneficiaries safe during the pandemic.

Very proud of Nadia and Niklas for being named two of the most influential lawyers under 40 in 2020 by SBR. Nadia, who juggles lawyering with her MP duties, has worked with listed movie production, media and entertainment company mm2 Asia (together with its subsidiary Cathay Cineplexes) over the last four years, including the recently announced potential merger with Golden Village. Niklas, who is one of TSMP's youngest associate directors ever, has also been involved in some of our most complex matters, such as the US$600 million trust dispute that includes tracing assets held in off-shore companies over a span of 50 years.

These lawyers have experience in areas ranging from banking to white collar crime.

Happy to share that TSMP Law Corporation has once again been named one of the Champions of Good by the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre. It has been tough this year to organise our usual Handprint community programme due to Covid-19, so in its place we sourced for, and packed and sent goodie bags to medical frontliners for their personal needs as they fought tirelessly to help patients suffering from the coronavirus. The award also recognises the many hours of pro bono work each and every TSMPer puts in to ensure access to justice for all.

TSMP caps off 2020 with another accolade, this time for Transactional Boutique Law Firm of the Year. Incredibly, this is the fifth time in a row that we have won one of ALB SE Asia Law Awards' "boutique firm" honours. Our corporate practice continues to be involved in headline deals, such as the $3.2b merger of Singlife and Aviva Singapore; the $2.1b recapitalisation of Sembcorp Marine and demerger of Sembcorp Industries and Sembcorp Marine; and YTL Group's $331m acquisition of Tuaspring from troubled Hyflux.
