KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA β€” THIS is the result of an illegal sham eviction organized by Matt Rawlings; Sengenics's Arif Anwar, Johan "Joey" Iskandar and Kiranjit Kaur and Icon Residence landlords Davina Balakrishnan and Thevan Thuraisingam.

The fake eviction was for Rawlings's wife. Legal proceedings were underway to determine her residence since Rawlings abandoned her in KL, the city they moved to for his job as a director at Sengenics, a biotech.

"Please send the police. Please send the police or someone. Please, please, please send someone!" begged Rawlings's wife.

"If they're not supposed to be doing this, why are they doing it?" in reference to Rawlings's visit to the wife's home two weeks earlier on January 15, 2018.

"They're trying to break the door," she said on the phone with her lawyer in her Malaysian lawsuit against her husband.

"It's one ... one, hyphen, o, nine, hyphen, o, one (1-09-01) Icon Residence. One, nine, one Icon Residence. Please, please, please, please!"

TWO YEARS AGO: On February 2, 2018, Rawlings carried out a phony eviction of his wife from their previous marital home at Icon because he and his girlfriend, Sheila Rinaldy, wanted furniture for their new condo. Rawlings and Rinaldy moved into a unit at Residensi22 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on February 1, 2018.

Matthew Rawlings exploited the financial control in his marriage when his wife could not work on her Malaysian spousal visa under the country's expatriate law.

She, an American with a degree in journalism, gave up her career and earnings to support him in his job when the couple moved to Asia.

Rawlings's wife was a "trailing spouse," where wives and husbands cannot work on their spousal visas, due to local laws, after following their partners abroad for their careers. They are entirely dependent on their other half.

Life is good for Westerners in Asia. Rawlings, a Brit, filed for divorce and stranded his wife in the country.

He also staged an eviction of his wife from their marital home in Kuala Lumpur, where the wife still lived after he moved out.

Rawlings's wife almost died from his sham plans, an extreme example of economic abuse that resulted in the "fake eviction/pepper spray incident" in news headlines in February 2018.

The rent was paid. ...

"Abuse often involves money, with one partner monopolizing financial resources as a way to exercise control in an intimate relationship. It’s a specific type of abuse that advocates say makes it harder for victims to leave and rebuild independent lives but remains a woefully understudied issue. ...

"While Sara’s family led an upper-class lifestyle with a $100,000 luxury car and lavish vacations every year, she was constantly counting pennies.

To save money, she stopped wearing makeup, started shopping at second-hand stores and learned to make the most of coupons, she says.

'There were two years I went without a haircut,'" Sara said.

Abuse often involves money, but advocates say financial abuse in particular makes it harder for victims to leave and rebuild independent lives.

TWO YEARS AGO: On February 2, 2018, Matthew J.L. Rawlings carried out a phony eviction of his wife from their previous marital home at Icon Residence because he and his girlfriend, Sheila Rinaldy, wanted furniture for their new condo. Rawlings and Rinaldy moved into a unit at Residensi22 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on February 1, 2018.

Rawlings first visited Icon on January 15, 2018, where the wife still lived. Aware of his plans to enter the home, she lodged a report with the Royal Malaysian Police on January 14, 2018, and stated that she felt intimidated and harassed by Rawlings.

She sued him in October 2017 for abandonment, accommodation and visa renewal during divorce proceedings in the United Kingdom. Spouses who follow their husbands and wives to Malaysia (and in some other countries) for employment, are not permitted to work on their spousal visa (dependent's pass) under the law.

The case, the first of its kind in the country, was underway in the High Court of Malaysia. A judge had yet to rule when Rawlings visited that January. He brought a moving company with him that day, unbeknownst to the wife.

TWO WEEKS LATER: While his wife was home alone at Icon Residence, the landlords, Davina A/P Balakrishnan and Thevan Ramesh Thuraisingam, broke the lock on her front door without knocking or prior notice.

They received that month's rent money, MYR 4,000 (USD $1,000), to carry out Rawlings's plan to fake an eviction for furniture. Sengenics, where Rawlings was a director and one of the top three in charge, paid rent as a part of his housing allowance in his job contract.

Rawlings's wife did not know Thuraisingam, the male landlord. She had never encountered, seen nor spoke to him before; yet, still, he entered her home.

Frightened, she grabbed her pepper spray and sprayed him in self-defense. After he backed out the condo, she called the police and barricaded herself in the house by placing furniture against the broken door.

She still wonders what Thuraisingam had planned to do to her?

When others attempted to enter her home later that day after the lock was broken, she sprayed pepper spray through a one-inch gap between the door and door frame. The furniture behind the door, including a refrigerator, washing machine, dryer, etc., prevented the door from opening further.

She did not know some of the others outside her door included members of the police she had been trying to call.

Rawlings currently works for Thermo Fisher (Life Technologies) and lives with Rinaldy in Singapore.

Rawlings's wife filmed from behind her door during the fake eviction, after using pepper spray on Thuraisingam.
