Complete Overview: 5 Crucial Changes in the Sweden Work Permit Rules 2026
Since June 1, 2026, we are navigating a completely new landscape for work permits in Sweden. Furthermore, Statistics Sweden (SCB) raised the national median salary on June 16, which immediately redrew the map for salary requirements. Do you have ongoing applications or candidates waiting for a decision? This affects you directly.
Here are the 5 most important changes you as an employer need to know:
New, strict salary floor of SEK 34,470/month. First-time applications now require a salary of at least 90% of the new median salary. (Don't forget that the collective agreement level always applies if it is higher).
Transition window for extensions. Until December 1, 2026, the 80% requirement applies to extensions, but be vigilant: it is calculated on the new median salary, meaning you must reach at least SEK 30,640/month.
Exemptions and stopped professions. Certain shortage occupations are exempted and only require 75% of the median salary (SEK 28,725). At the same time, standard work permits are completely stopped for certain professions, such as personal assistants and wild berry pickers.
Requirement for comprehensive health insurance. If the employment is for a maximum of 1 year, the applicant must now prove they have comprehensive health insurance for Sweden (in addition to the standard occupational insurances).
Expanded scrutiny of the company. Migrationsverket now has greater authority to reject applications based on shortcomings, sanctions, or irregularities in the employer's history. Good compliance is more important than ever.
Your Action Plan:
Conduct a salary audit immediately on ongoing cases, submit extensions well before December 1, and quality-assure insurances for short contracts.
