Residence Programs in Portugal are divided into two categories:

1.Temporary Residence, through which the applicant can obtain a residence permit, valid for a period of two years, renewable for successive periods of three years;

2.Permanent Residence, through which the applicant can obtain a residence permit with no validity limit, but has to renew the card itself every five years;

Permanent residence can only be obtained, without prejudice to the other requirements, if the applicant has held a temporary residence permit for at least five years;

In addition, residence in Portugal allows for the acquisition of nationality five years after applying for a residence permit, if it is granted.

Among the Residence Programs, the Golden Visa Program stands out as it is the only one that allows the applicant to have a valid residence permit (with the possibility of obtaining nationality) while staying only seven days a year in Portugal.
