✈️ Travelling through Lisbon, Porto, or Faro airports soon? Using the correct queue can save you up to 3 hours at passport control—a decisive difference when catching connections or arriving after a long flight.

Many non-EU residents aren't aware that holding a valid Portuguese Residence Permit (Cartão de Residência) entitles you to bypass the long "All Passports" tourist line!

Here is what you need to know about navigating airport border control as a resident:

🔹 The E-Gate "Hybrid" System
Non-EU passport holders with residence permits can scan their passports at the automated e-gates, followed by a quick physical check of their residence card by a PSP officer standing directly behind the gate.

🔹 Common E-Gate Pitfalls
• E-gates frequently reject newly renewed passports if they haven't been updated in the AIMA database.
• Older non-biometric cards, extension decrees, and families traveling with minors (under 18) must use manual lanes.

🔹 How to Use the Manual EU Line (Your Backup Plan)
If e-gates are offline or reject your passport, DO NOT go to the long tourist queue!

1️⃣ Keep your Passport AND Cartão de Residência out in your hand.
2️⃣ Approach the manual EU/EEA/CH / Resident lane.
3️⃣ If queue marshals try to redirect you based on your passport cover, show your residence permit and clearly state: "Sou residente em Portugal" (I am a resident in Portugal).
