According to the Polish law, the ius sanguinis principle applies, which means that a child acquires citizenship from its parents (article 14 of the act of 2 April 2009 on Polish citizenship). Complementarily only it applies the principle of ius soli, when a child born on the territory of Poland has not acquired any other citizenship.
Ius soli whereas is in force in Argentina, Chile, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, the United States, Uruguay, Venezuela.
Therefore, in the Polish legal system it is possible, with some exceptions, to confirm Polish citizenship after parents or grandparents, even though the child was not born in Poland, does not live in Poland or does not speak Polish language.
When confirming the citizenship of the child after the grandparent, you do not have to apply for the confirmation of the citizenship of the parents in the first place; you can immediately apply for confirmation of citizenship by the grandson/granddaughter – we omit the parents’ line, although it will obviously be important in the confirmation process.
