The UK Immigration White Paper is here!
In this post, let’s breakdown in simple terms what it could mean for international students, graduate professionals, entrepreneurs and dependents:
1. Graduate Route to be reduced
The 2-year Graduate visa (PSW) to be cut to 18 months, with stronger conditions attached such as the kind of jobs graduates are allowed to take.
2. Skilled Worker route getting tighter
- Most below degree level roles are expected to be removed from eligibility criteria.
- A new Temporary Shortage List will play a key role, but fewer sectors will qualify.
- Current visa holders can still switch jobs/sponsors or apply for extensions, but newcomers will need to meet tougher rules.
- Employers will need to train the local workforce first to justify overseas hiring.
- Social care: Overseas recruitment for care worker roles is ending.
3. Residency (ILR) stretched
Unfortunately, settlement period is to go from 5 to 10 years for most applicants. Some high-contribution or high-skilled individuals might still qualify earlier but let’s wait for more clarity on this one!
Life in the UK Test is also under review and most likely to be revamped with certain elements of English assessment.
Global Talent, Innovator founder and Dependents of British nationals will not impacted by this and can still apply for ilr after 3 to 5 year, respectively.
4. English language requirements rising
Main applicants and even certain adult dependents will need to meet stricter English levels, with progress checks especially required for visa extensions and settlement.
5. Global Talent & Innovator Founder: Encouraged
While some routes tighten, the government is actively promoting the Global Talent and Innovator Founder visas to attract exceptional talent, especially in high-impact or high-growth sectors.
If you’ve got standout achievements or a strong business idea, this could be the golden window.
6. Immigration Skills Charge rising
Employers looking to sponsor international workers may see the ISC increase by 32%, adding more cost to sponsorship.
7. One positive for postgrad students
Dependents are still allowed for MRes and PhD applicants, no changes here..
