A British National (Overseas) (BNO) from Hong Kong can become a British citizen in the UK through a multi-step process that involves the BNO Visa, residency, and naturalization. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Apply for the BNO Visa
The British National (Overseas) Visa allows BNO passport holders and their eligible family members to live, work, and study in the UK.
Eligibility for the BNO Visa:
Must be a British National (Overseas).
You can include family members in your application (spouse, partner, children under 18, or in some cases, adult dependent relatives).
Provide proof of adequate finances to support yourself without public funds.
Duration of Stay:
The BNO Visa is usually granted for either 2.5 years (extendable) or 5 years.
Step 2: Fulfil Residency Requirements
To qualify for British citizenship, you must live in the UK for a continuous period under the BNO Visa.
Residency Period:
Live in the UK for 5 years to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
You cannot spend more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period during this time.
Step 3: Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
Once you have lived in the UK for 5 years under the BNO Visa, you can apply for ILR.
ILR Requirements:
Meet the residency requirements.
Pass the English language test (unless exempt).
Pass the Life in the UK Test.
Demonstrate good character (no criminal convictions, adhere to UK immigration laws).
Step 4: Apply for Naturalization as a British Citizen
After holding ILR for 12 months, you can apply for British citizenship through naturalization.
Naturalization Requirements:
Have lived in the UK for a total of 6 years (5 years under the BNO Visa + 1 year with ILR).
Prove knowledge of the English language (if not done during the ILR stage).
Pass the Life in the UK Test (if not already passed during the ILR stage).
Be of good character.
Intend to make the UK your permanent home.
Key Points to Remember:
Family Members: Eligible family members can apply with you at every stage (BNO Visa, ILR, naturalization).
Children Born in the UK: Children born in the UK to parents with ILR or British citizenship can automatically become British citizens.
Dual Citizenship: British law allows dual citizenship, so you can retain your BNO status or any other citizenship unless restricted by your home country's laws.
Application Process and Costs:
BNO Visa Application Fee: £180–£250 per person (excluding healthcare surcharge).
ILR Application Fee: £2,885 per person.
Naturalisation Fee: £1,330 per person.
