CCP Slaps Rs. 5 Million Fine on Bureau Veritas Impersonator in Landmark Brand-Protection Win
Pakistan's Competition Commission (CCP) has fined M/s MCI-Bureau of Inspection & Certifications Pakistan Rs. 5 million for masquerading as Bureau Veritas, the 198-year-old French testing, inspection and certification (TIC) giant.
The Commission found the domestic firm had copied the dominant features of Bureau Veritas's trademark and logo to falsely imply association and credibility, misleading businesses and consumers who rely on such certifications for safety and quality assurance, despite holding no proven accreditation to offer inspection, testing or certification services. The ruling cites a violation of Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010.
Alongside the penalty, CCP ordered the respondent to immediately stop using Bureau Veritas's trademark and logo, adopt a distinct brand identity, secure proper accreditation before offering TIC services, and file a compliance report within 60 days. Non-compliance triggers a further Rs. 50,000 per day penalty and potential proceedings under Section 38 of the Act.
Bureau Veritas was represented by Ali & Associates, with the case led by Partner Ali Kabir Shah assisted by Senior Associate Saif Ahmed. "This order reflects exactly the kind of protection our international clients look for when they enter the Pakistani market, a regulator willing to act decisively, and a legal representation able to build the case with precision," Shah said.
The firm thanked the Bureau Veritas and their IP team, including Group Head of Intellectual Property Marie Turpin, for their trust. A case the firm says highlights its strength in IP and competition law for both multinational and domestic clients.
Founded in 1828, Bureau Veritas operates in over 140 countries through more than 1,600 offices and laboratories worldwide.
