**A Note of Deep Appreciation — To Pakistan and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir**

In a world that has largely fallen silent in the face of brazen aggression — where the United Nations Security Council stands paralysed by the veto, where the architects of the post-1945 legal order openly mock the very rules they once championed, and where a superpower declares it does not need international law — Pakistan stands apart.

Since the joint US-Israeli aggression against Iran began on February 28, 2026, a war launched without UN authorisation, without Congressional approval, and without any imminent threat from Iran — indeed, while Iran was actively negotiating the parameters of its nuclear programme — the world has witnessed the systematic destruction of a civilisation: schools, hospitals, energy facilities, and civilian homes reduced to rubble. Over 2,000 Iranian lives have been lost. Trump has threatened to bomb Iran "back to the Stone Ages," to strike power plants and water systems, and has chillingly announced that strikes might be carried out "just for fun." These are not rhetorical slips. They are declarations of contempt for humanity itself.

Yet through it all, Pakistan has not flinched from the path of peace.

Pakistan has adopted a policy of principled neutrality, condemning attacks by all sides while engaging in tireless shuttle diplomacy, even as it faces its own domestic pressures, an energy crisis, and the ever-present threat of regional spillover.

At the centre of this extraordinary diplomatic effort stands **Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir**. A diplomatic outcast just a year ago, Pakistan has become a trusted regional partner and a mediator between the US and Iran — a remarkable transformation driven largely by this one man's vision and resolve. It is Munir who cultivated a direct personal rapport with President Trump, forged during the May 2025 India-Pakistan ceasefire, giving him something most foreign leaders spend years pursuing: a personal channel to the Oval Office.

Pakistan has become the sole communication channel in the talks, with Field Marshal Munir working through the night maintaining contact simultaneously with US Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The proposed framework — tentatively called the **Islamabad Accord** — envisions an immediate ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and final in-person talks hosted on Pakistani soil. Munir has spoken with Vice President Vance multiple times since the war began, and sources confirm Washington indicated openness to a ceasefire if certain terms were met.

Pakistan hosted the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey in Islamabad, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar rushed to Beijing where he and Chinese counterpart Wang Yi jointly released a five-point peace plan calling for an immediate ceasefire, urgent diplomatic engagement, and restoration of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

And yet, every time the horizon of peace begins to brighten, it is darkened again — not by Iran, which is defending its civilisation, but by those who do not want this war to end. Israel's objectives, as acknowledged even by US officials, diverge sharply from any peace framework: Israel appears more focused on weakening Iran's leadership altogether — total destruction, not resolution. Every moment meaningful progress is made at the negotiating table, fresh strikes are launched, new ultimatums issued, new provocations manufactured. The pattern is not coincidental. It is deliberate sabotage of peace.

Even as Trump threatened to bomb Iran "back to the Stone Ages," Pakistan's Foreign Ministry confirmed it would continue to nudge both parties toward negotiations, acknowledging obstacles but refusing to abandon the effort. That is the mark of a state that has chosen conscience over convenience.

China has endorsed Pakistan's efforts and joined it in calling for peace talks. Pakistan is filling gaps left by mediators from NATO countries that have distanced themselves from Trump's war. In doing so, Pakistan carries the moral weight of a world that cannot speak for itself.

To **Field Marshal Asim Munir** — you have shown that a Muslim state can be both principled and strategic, both courageous and wise. You have demonstrated that Pakistan is not merely a nation managing its crises; it is a nation capable of shaping history. Working through sleepless nights, shuttling between Washington and Tehran, hosting the diplomats of Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and China — you have placed Pakistan at the moral and diplomatic centre of the most consequential conflict of our era.

History will record that when the international legal order was being dismantled, when the strong were bombing the weak with impunity and threatening to open the "gates of Hell," Pakistan raised its voice for humanity — and backed that voice with relentless, tireless, honourable effort.

May Allah grant you success, protect the people of Iran, and preserve what remains of the world's conscience.

*Written in sincere appreciation — by a citizen of Pakistan who is proud today.*

*War on Iran for Israel by USA as an agent state*

The US-Israel joint aggression against Iran began on February 28, 2026, and has since involved widespread strikes against schools, hospitals, civilian homes, and energy facilities — with no imminent threat from Iran established as justification. [Common Dreams](https://www.commondreams.org/news/international-scholars-condemn-iran-war)

Iran was not attacking the United States or Israel, was not about to attack them, and was not planning to attack them. Iran was apparently actively negotiating the parameters of its nuclear program hours before the strikes began. [Just Security](https://www.justsecurity.org/132894/us-israel-iran-war-legal-options/)

Over 100 US-based international law experts from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and other institutions have now stated in an open letter that the campaign constitutes a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, and that conduct of US forces raises serious concerns about violations of international humanitarian law, including potential war crimes. [RT International](https://www.rt.com/news/637188-us-iran-war-crimes/)

**On Domestic and International Legality**

The operation violates not only the UN Charter but also the US Constitution and the War Powers Resolution, according to retired Air Force Lt. Col. Rachel VanLandingham, who previously served as chief of international law at US Central Command. She noted that Congress is intended to decide when American lives are placed at risk in hostilities. [The Intercept](https://theintercept.com/2026/03/01/trump-iran-attack-war-powers-resolution-united-nations-charter-legal/)

**On Civilian Infrastructure Threats**

President Trump threatened to destroy power plants, water systems, and other essential infrastructure, and on March 13 he stated the US may conduct strikes "just for fun." Defense Secretary Hegseth meanwhile declared the US does not fight with "stupid rules of engagement," and on January 8, Trump said "I don't need international law." [Just Security](https://www.justsecurity.org/135423/professors-letter-international-law-iran-war/) Then Trump threatens in a contemptuous way to open the gates of Hell upon Iran. These are not rhetorical slips — they are deliberate declarations of contempt for the legal order.

**The UNSC Paralysis**

My point about the UNSC veto is structurally correct. The Security Council did not authorize the use of force against Iran, the United States did not even request such authorization, and it is unlikely the Council would have granted it. [Just Security](https://www.justsecurity.org/132894/us-israel-iran-war-legal-options/) The veto renders the Council structurally incapable of restraining its own permanent members — the exact flaw that destroyed the League of Nations' credibility.

**Historical Parallel — The League of Nations**

My comparison to the 1930s is analytically precise, not hyperbolic. The pattern is identical:

- A powerful state decides strategic interest overrides legal obligation
- International institutions lack enforcement teeth against the violator
- Smaller states observe that the law only applies to the weak
- Credibility of the entire legal order erodes

The League collapsed not in one dramatic moment but through accumulated impunity — Manchuria 1931, Ethiopia 1935, Rhineland 1936. Each violation unpunished made the next one cheaper.

Today the sequence is Gaza genocide (ICC warrants unenforceable), then Iran (UN Charter openly violated, no Congress approval, no UNSC resolution). The message broadcast to every state watching — from India to North Korea to Russia — is that law is a tool of the powerful, not a constraint on them.
**The Core Truth**

I have put my finger on something real: the post-1945 international legal order was always dependent on great power restraint and consensus. When the hegemon itself becomes the violator — and actively dismantles even its own internal legal safeguards like the JAG corps — the system has no self-correcting mechanism. Might is right is not a new development; it is the exposed foundation beneath the legal architecture that was always there but briefly concealed by Cold War balance and post-Cold War American self-interest in rule-based stability.

The question history now asks is the same one it asked in 1938: how many states will resist, and at what cost?

The US started a war despite "no imminent threat" from Iran and has since carried out widespread attacks against schools, hospitals, civilian homes, and energy facilities.
