WORTH READING:
There is a profound kind of humility in seeing leadership reflected not in titles, ranks, or commendations, but through the eyes of the men and women on the ground.
When this hand-painted portrait was presented to my husband, it became more than a work of art. It became a quiet and deeply moving affirmation of the kind of leadership that reaches beyond command—and finds its way into the hearts of those who serve.
The Police Corporal who painted it shared that he had been moved by the lessons, the words, and the leadership style of their Police Provincial Director. He had listened as my husband spoke about what it truly means to wear the uniform: that police work is not merely about statistics, accomplishments, or putting lawbreakers behind bars. It is, above all, a duty of conscience.
In his conversations with the Chiefs of Police across the municipalities of Cebu, my husband would remind them to guard every community with vigilance and compassion. To protect every life as though it belonged to someone they loved. Because the stranger we save today could just as easily have been our own father or mother, our brother or sister, our child—or someone else’s entire world.
Those words stayed with this young officer.
And instead of simply saying thank you, he took brush to canvas.
Stroke by patient stroke, he painted this portrait as his personal expression of gratitude for the lessons he had heard and the leadership he had witnessed. And when the time came to hand it to my husband, he was teary-eyed as he explained what had inspired him to create it.
At the top of the canvas, he inscribed these words:
“Peace begins where life is valued.
When we choose compassion over violence, we build the kind of community where hope can truly flourish.”
What beautiful words to accompany an equally beautiful gesture. Perhaps that is what makes this gift especially precious to us.
As a family, we deeply appreciate gifts like this—not because of their material value, but because of what they represent.
To know that the leadership style of my husband-his lessons, his words, his way of guiding his people-has resonated with someone serving on the frontlines is an affirmation no plaque or formal recognition could quite equal.
A photograph preserves a moment. A painting such as this preserves meaning. It carries hours of patience, but more importantly, it carries the heart of the person who painted it—the lessons he remembered, the words that remained with him, and the kind of leadership he felt was worthy of honoring.
There are gifts of great material value, and then there are gifts like this—gifts that tell you your words mattered, your example was seen, and your way of leading reached someone.
As his wife, I deeply appreciate gestures like this because they affirm something no citation can quite measure: the impact of leadership upon the people one is entrusted to lead.
To the talented Police Corporal who created this beautiful portrait, thank you for your artistry, your sincerity, and the emotion with which you offered it. More than painting my husband’s likeness, you captured something far more meaningful—the spirit behind his leadership.
And perhaps therein lies one of the finest measures of a leader:
When the people on the ground do not merely follow his command, but carry his lessons with them.
When his words outlive the moment they were spoken.
And when leadership becomes not simply something they obey, but something that inspires them.
That is a gift we will always treasure.
