The Supreme Court’s affirmation of Mayor Susan Yap’s mandate is more than the resolution of an election dispute—it is a reaffirmation of the Rule of Law.
Election disputes are not decided by public opinion, political influence, or the loudest voices. They are resolved through the application of the Constitution, election laws, procedural due process, and the evidence presented before the courts.
The decision underscores a fundamental principle in a constitutional democracy: the sovereign will of the electorate must be respected unless there is a clear legal basis to set it aside. At the same time, it highlights the judiciary’s indispensable role as the final arbiter of electoral controversies, ensuring that both the integrity of the electoral process and the people’s mandate are protected.
Whether one agrees with the outcome or not, respect for final judicial decisions is an essential pillar of our legal system. It is through adherence to the Rule of Law—not the Rule of Men—that public confidence in our democratic institutions is preserved.
