The NEMSU - College of Law, through the BULIG Legal Assistance Center, led by Dean Daniel L. Diaz and Supervising Lawyer Atty. Glou Diamond D. Destajo, together with the Law Student Practitioners, conducted a jail visit and legal consultation at the Tandag and Tago Police Stations.

The team also extended free legal consultations to the faculty, staff, and students of NEMSU Cagwait Campus, as part of its continuing commitment to provide accessible legal assistance to the community.

In partnership with the CSWD of Tandag City, BULIG and its Law Student Practitioners, under the supervision of Dean Daniel Diaz and Atty. Glou Destajo, extended free legal services to the residents of Bongtud, Tandag City.

The legal aid activity is part of the series of programs in the celebration of the 2025 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

Earlier today, the "Law and Environment" class under Atty. Daniel L. Diaz has successfully launched an Awareness Campaign on the Legal Framework and environmental protection. Joining the activity are the Legal Research Paper 1 and 2 classes under Dean Diaz, together with Batch Dayaw.

The class shares one of its outputs featuring excerpts of the interview with Forester Jerry A. Bernadas of Tandag Water District. This video aims to spread awareness and foster reverence, care, and love for Mother Nature, particularly our watersheds.

By spreading awareness about environmental laws and encouraging people to cherish and protect nature, this campaign not only highlights the importance of legal education but also promotes a sense of collective responsibility toward preserving our environment.

In celebration of Women’s Month, BULIG – Legal Assistance Center of NEMSU College of Law, through its Law Student Practitioners, conducted a Legal Public Orientation on The Safe Spaces Act of 2019 (Bawal Bastos Law), last March 18, 2024, in Tandag City and Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, as well as in Butuan City.

The activity promotes a gender-fair and inclusive environment. It educates participants on all forms of gender stereotyping and biases.

It was participated by the Senior BA Political Science Students of NEMSU - Tandag Campus, Junior Students of NEMSU -Cagwait Campus, and Senior Criminology Students of St. Joseph Institute of Technology in Butuan City.

The Public Legal Orientation was a success and the Law Student Practitioners were grateful for the support of BULIG Supervising Lawyers, namely: Atty. Cristian Ramirez, Atty. Jodelle Chris Cuanan, Atty. Joseph Eric Lumactod, Atty. Jhodessy Jane Brian, Atty. Daveau Aribal, and Atty. Ronald Magallano, and BULIG Director, Dean Daniel Diaz.

Pioneering NEMSU Law students on their externship program with various esteemed institutions, including the Office of Provincial Prosecutor in Surigao del Sur, Office of City Prosecutor in Tandag, Commission on Human Rights in Butuan City, and NEMSU Legal Unit. This program is a mandatory component of the Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP) for graduating students.

To provide more access to free legal services relative to environmental concerns, human rights issues and legal needs of the indigenous peoples, BULIG conluded year 2023 with its last meeting.

Discussed in the meeting, among others, were:

1. Re-orientation regarding BULIG’s mission and vision, and key roles in the community;
2. Public Orientation Activities for 2024; and
3. Legal Research Outputs.

BULIG, together with the PSWDO, conducted FREE LEGAL SERVICES to the employees of the Provincial Government of Surigao del Sur at Capitol Hills, Tandag City, in celebration of the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women.

NEMSU’s Legal Assistance Center, BULIG, is open on the following dates (from 9:00 - 11:00 AM):

- October 11 and 18, 2023; and
- November 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2023.

Services offered are:

-Free Legal Consultation;
-Free Legal Documentation;
-Court Representation (cases involving Environment and Human Rights Violations); and
-Public Legal Orientation (Indigenous Peoples Communities.)
