Big Changes to Partner Visas

Warning! There are a lot of these scary notices appearing on Social Media at the moment, including lots of click-bait hype. Please take a few deep breaths before responding!

I’ve been in this game for many years. I’ve seen the grandstanding. I’ve seen the threats. I’ve seen “Sponsors will need to be pre-approved!” “Soon all partner visa applicants will be assessed on their English skills!” “Partner visa numbers will be reduced!” All of which fizzled out.

They have said that family visa numbers may be reduced. They are talking about “Remaining Relative Visas” and “Carer Visas”. These only add up to a few hundred visas a year! Not less partner visas!

They have said that they don’t want onshore partner visas. This one? I think it’s possible they may start applying Condition 8503 on Tourist Visas, which means if you’re in Australia on a Tourist Visa you can’t apply for another visa whilst inside Australia. This used to be standard from Manila until 12 or 13 years ago. I remember it well.

IF this happens? NO effect on Tourist Visa holders! You visit, and you return home. If you have multiple entry? You may then return again on the same visa.

IF this happens? It will mean no applying for partner visas onshore. IF this happens, it will be unfortunate. But OFFSHORE Partner Visas will remain an option.

But we will wait and see and we will tell you what we know IF this and anything else actually happens.

This is the result of the rise in xenophobia in the political arena. The Government wants votes. The Government makes noise about “being tough”! If you want it to stop? Don’t contribute to the extremist banter in social media.

Did you do your own Australian Partner Visa application? Now the Department is sending you a “Request for Information”?
