Walt Whitman was a well-known figure in American literature. He was a poet, essayist, and journalist. As a humanist, he contributed to the movement away from transcendentalism and towards realism, incorporating elements of both schools of thought into his writing. It is common practise to refer to Whitman as the "father" of free verse because he is one of the most influential poets in the American canon. His work was criticised at the time it was published, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was criticised for its overt sensuality and was considered offensive by some. Whitman's personal life came under scrutiny due to the widespread assumption that he was gay.

He is best known for Walden, a reflection on simple living in nature, and "Civil Disobedience," an argument for disobeying an unjust state. Anarchists call Thoreau. "I heartily accept the motto,β€”'That government is best which governs least;' and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe,β€”'That government is best which governs not at all;' and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.... But, to speak practically and as a citizen, unlike those who call themselves citizens,
