It was a productive and meaningful Friday afternoon as women’s human rights organizations convened for a dialogue with Ms. Reem Alsalem, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, and Ms. Signe Poulsen, Senior Human Rights Adviser to the United Nations in the Philippines. The gathering provided a valuable opportunity to examine the current landscape of violence against women and to discuss the persistent challenges confronting women and girls across the Philippines.

Our sincere appreciation goes to Lenlen Mesina for her steadfast efforts to create and sustain spaces where civil society organizations can engage in critical and timely conversations of this nature.

Safety, strength, and freedom for women and girls!

The Women’s Legal and Human Rights Bureau Inc. held a public awareness activity entitled, “Kababaihan at Batang Babae para sa sa Kaligtasan, Kalakasan at Kalayaan”, last March 14, 2026, in Barangay Tumana, Marikina City. Women and girls from Tumana reflected on how traditional gender roles shape their responsibilities before, during, and after disasters, deepened their understanding of what safety means in the context of the climate crisis, and identified the support they need from their families, community, and local government to feel safe and protected.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to amplify the voices of women and girls in disaster-prone communities like Marikina, where flooding is a recurring reality. Through interactive activities, women and girls shared their lived experiences and highlighted how their roles as caregivers, providers, and community members become even more burdensome during disasters. The activity also created a space to challenge harmful stereotypes, emphasize the importance of women’s participation in decision-making, and recognize that safety includes access to basic needs and protection from harassment and violence.

This activity is jointly implemented by UN Women and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) with support from the governments of Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, and Switzerland. EmPower is dedicated to empowering women and marginalized groups to take the lead in building climate-resilient communities.

The Women’s Legal and Human Rights Bureau organized a feminist workshop and conversation during the 2nd Southeast Asian Women’s Summit and 8th National Women’s Summit, held last March 2-3, 2026.

The session, “Economic Justice Reimagined: A Feminist Workshop and Conversation,” created a space for dialogue among women from different sectors across Southeast Asia to reflect on the realities and struggles of women and girls in advancing economic justice. Through shared stories and experiences, issues such as violence, protection of ancestral lands, recognition of unpaid care, and the importance of food security and women’s leadership surfaced in the discussion.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our resource speakers; From LILAK, Sophia Bonifacio, bringing the voices of indigenous women, and from the Weaving Women’s Voices in Southeast Asia (WEAVE); Ika Agustina from Kalyanamitra, and Reasey Seng of SILAKA, for grounding the conversation in the lived experiences of women and girls in Southeast Asia.

Participants also took part in a collective activity called the Protest Wall, where they illustrated silhouettes representing themselves, their organizations, or their communities, and wrote their calls to action on mini megaphones and placards.

The Women's Legal and Human Rights Bureau joined the World March of Women-Pilipinas today in the Office of Ombudsman with other women's rights groups and advocates to demand accountability and justice.

WMW filed a letter of complaint against 4th district, Quezon City Rep. B**g Suntay for violation of the Safe Spaces Act, the Magna Carta of Women, and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

WLB highlighted that from the revelations in the Epstein case to the incident involving B**g Suntay, acts of sexual violence and sexist behavior against women and girls continue to be normalized, as though they are an inevitable part of women’s daily lives.

We refuse to accept this reality.

We will not be silenced, and we demand accountability. Sexism has no place in our society. The lewd remarks made by B**g Suntay are unacceptable and must not be tolerated.

Public office demands the highest standards of accountability, and any conduct that demeans women must be addressed under Philippine law. Therefore, B**g Suntay must be held accountable before the Philippine court.

WLB participated in the 2nd Southeast Asian Women’s Summit and the 8th National Women’s Summit, held on March 2-3, 2026 at Miriam College, two days of conversations, learning, and feminist solidarity with friends and partners across Southeast Asia. WLB also contributed to several conversations during the summit: moderating the Firechat Dialogue on women’s place in the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairpersonship, organizing and facilitating the parallel session “Economic Justice Reimagined: A Feminist Workshop and Conversation,” and sharing reflections during the Youth-Led Action Across Movements.

More than the panels and discussions, the summit was also about reconnecting with old friends and meeting new allies. It's always good to be in the same room with brilliant women, young feminists, and friends from the movement across Southeast Asia! Happy Women’s Month!
