We thank Atty. Jin Arabejo and Mr. Vicente Gudani for their valuable input yesterday in the seminar “On legal matters and tax compliance for NGOs.”

We recognize the important work of civil society organizations, and we believe that it is equally important to equip them with knowledge of Philippine laws as regards their creation and obligations so that their rights are protected.

Atty. Maria Sol Taule is currently in Europe to talk about the cases of attacks against activists and rights defenders using repressive laws in the Philippines. She particularly highlighted the attacks against two young environmental defenders Jonila Castro and Jhed Tamano, who were abducted by alleged state forces in September 2023. Tamano and Castro were active in anti-reclamation projects in Manila Bay being funded by Boskalis, a Dutch company. The said project will have huge and irreversible socio-ecological impacts on coastal communities and ecosystems.

Human rights defenders and peoples’ lawyers play a key role in safeguarding social justice and upholding the rights of marginalized sectors against threats, vilification, red-tagging, and trumped-up charges, among other abuses. However, our defenders are under attack, too.

Just this year, we witnessed how the AFP filed multiple trumped-up complaints under the Anti-Terrorism Law against Southern Tagalog paralegals, alleging them to be enemies of the state after conducting a fact-finding mission. Last September, environmental defenders were forcibly disappeared in Bataan and forced to execute a false sworn statement of “surrender.” In the same month, peoples’ lawyer Atty. Liwliwa Saniata Alzate was murdered in broad daylight. As International Human Rights Day draws near, it is ever more relevant to expose the state for its blatant disregard for our rights and stand in solidarity with those who continue the struggle.

In line with this, UP NUPL invites everyone to attend our forum entitled "Defend the Defenders: A Forum on the Campaign to Stop the Attacks Against Lawyers and Human Rights Workers" on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Malcolm Theater, UP College of Law. The forum aims to shed light on the vilification, threats, and weaponization of the laws against our staunchest human rights advocates. It will also discuss the legal and non-legal strategies we can employ to counter these attacks.
