The government seems to be changing its tack to justify new taxes. From the often-repeated reason that it is imposing new or increasing taxes ‘due to the government’s response to the COVID-19 disease’ and now because of its concern over the ‘overconsumption of junk foods that causes harm to the body’, and that ‘three out of every 10 Filipinos aged 20 and older were overweight,’ and so on and so forth.

FILIPINOS ARE NOT PASAWAYS


There are about 10 million Filipinos working abroad according to an article that appeared in the National Geographic magazine dated December 2018. That represents some 10% of the present population of the country. Big. Very big. However, this figure should not be something to be boastful about. It patently shows the plight of millions of Filipinos who are forced to leave their loved ones to escape unemployment, low wages and limited opportunities in their own country. But unlike Japan who discontinued a plan to relocate their fast-ageing population in other countries because of a possible interpretation that it is "exporting" their elderly citizens, the Philippines did the opposite with its young and willing population. Now, a quarter of the world's seafarers are said to be Filipinos, many Filipino nurses are employed in the USA, UK, etc.

WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO SAY? THAT THE DUTERTE ADMINISTRATION NOW HAS NO REASON NOT TO EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN ITS FORTHCOMING BATTLE TO MITIGATE THE SEVERITY OF THE EXPECTED ECONOMIC RECESSION THIS YEAR AND THE NEXT. IT HAS SAID SEVERAL TIMES THAT IT HAS THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES AND MONETARY POLICY SPACE AT ITS DISPOSAL, THE ORGANIZATION AND THE BEST MINDS HANDPICKED BY NO LESS THAN THE PRESIDENT. INDEED, IT WILL BE A VERY INTERESTING "RACE" BETWEEN GLOBAL LEADERS.

PH TAGGED AS UN RAISES ALARM ON POLICE BRUTALITY IN LOCKDOWNS (Page 2, Philippine Daily Inquirer, April 30)

Woe to the Philippines. The United Nations Human Rights Office included the country, along with Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Sri Lanka, San Salvador, Dominican Republic, Peru, Honduras, Jordan, Morocco, Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Iran and Hungary as countries which declared emergencies due to the coronary pandemic where police had arrested or detained hundreds of thousands of people and killed others. This is very degrading.

The article added and I quote, "Emergency powers should not be a weapon governments can wield to quash dissent, control the population, and even perpetuate their time in power", UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bacheler said in a statement that denounced shootings and detentions without being specific.

THE PHILIPPINE ECONOMY: “KUNG……” IN TAGALOG AND “IF” IN ENGLISH

The storytellers in the administration’s camp seem to be on a holiday these past few days. I have not read any article about the usual dose of “good news” coming from Messrs. Dominguez, Pernia, Panelo, Diokno, Locsin, Cayetano, et al. It’s eerie.

Personally, I would not trade places with those people in the light of the recent rapid-fired, mega-sized disruptions which had happened so quickly and threatening to seriously derail the country’s economic performance not only for 2020 but further beyond. I’m referring to the recent events, viz., the African swine fever, the Taal volcano eruption and the most recent, the novel corona virus which, when taken together, will most certainly weighed down on the country’s GDP growth target for several years. On top of it all, the spark created by the recent conflict between Turkey and Syria will add uncertainty to the gloomy growth picture predicted by the World Bank for the world’s economy this year.
I expect the concerned government agencies to respond quickly to these developments as I finish this article so let us just wait and see what types of responses they will be.

I SURVIVED QUEZON CITY & CALOOCAN CITY's HORRIFIC TRAFFIC YESTERDAY ON MY WAY TO INSPECT PROJECTS

A tiring but productive day yesterday. I went to places not so many brokers often go to because of the bad traffic. Viewed some impressive luxury townhouse projects in Q.C. and an industrial/commercial subdivision in Caloocan City located some 1.5 kms. from Mindanao Avenue, an industrial zone populated by factories and warehouses of almost all types and a few commercial buildings.

Here's some photos of a luxury RFO townhouse project that you don't see very often. It has a small elevator going from ground to the 4th floor. Another one, also in Q.C., gives buyers the option to add another parking space by offering a car lift for the price of P300,000 only. Brilliant!
