As a criminal defense attorney for almost a decade, this statement gives me pause. For lawyers like me, work is not just doing this and that, and going home free from the burden of it. The burden of defending an innocent person, making sure he gets a fair and impartial trial, making sure he does not go to jail for something he did not do, is too heavy, and we have to carry it day and night.

Justice has many faces.

When I first met with my client who was r***d by someone she trusted, it was difficult to have a clear conversation with her as she was extremely emotional. Not only that she was betrayed and assaulted, but she was also victim-shamed and blamed.

Her face was just painted with pain, trauma and anger. Every hearing, every meeting, I had to help her see the strength of our evidence and share with her my trust in the justice system (while still giving a realistic forecast of what could be). We have prayed together for justice to prevail, here and now, or later.

Then in our most recent meetings, she appears to have changed. Amid the pain and trauma, she found her faith (or should it be - faith found her). She has been appointed by the President to a higher position, and now awaiting another promotion; she has flourishing businesses; and she is at peace, with faith, and living a full life. All these while the accused is still in jail.

These may be interim victories, but, for me, this is justice at work at an early stage.
