As the Benildean Deaf community stood united at the gates of the Taft campus, they proclaimed “I am proud to be deaf, and I deserve sign language rights” in posters and signage. Decades of relentless fighting from the Deaf community against inequality have never been stronger until today. In celebration of International Sign Language Day, they call out to the public to implement the stipulations in Republic Act 11106, or the Filipino Sign Language Law. Enacted last October 2018, the law enforces anti-discrimination campaigns across all sectors including education, health care, media, and workplaces.

“They’re killing the Filipino Sign Language,” exclaims Coordinator for Deaf Students Ana Arce after the government’s failure to allocate annual budget to implement the R.A. 11106, and the Department of Education’s choice not to implement Filipino Sign Language in the K-12 Basic Education Program. Arce adds, “As Benildeans, we need to make the public, the media, and the government aware that it is a fight for a basic right.”

The Benildean Deaf Rally took place in September 25, 2019 at the Taft Campus front gate, along Vito Cruz.

The FSL also mandates the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) and the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to require FSL interpreter insets in news and public affairs programs.

We Learn. We Connect. We Sign.

WeSign PH is a support group that encourages hearing/non-Deaf Filipinos through raising awareness about the linguistic identity of the Deaf community by acquiring necessary skills to engage in simple conversation with them. WeSign aims to bridge the divide between those who use their voices and those who use their hands to speak.

WeSign PH began as a fictional organization, done as project by three students taking their postgraduate studies in Communications and Applied Media Studies. As the followers of WeSign PH page grew, so did the three students grow their affection for this cause. They continue to keep this page as a support and advocacy group for those who wish to learn FSL or understand and communicate with their Deaf brothers and sisters better.

“Ask any Child of Deaf Adult (CODA) and they'll tell you that it's not easy growing up being able to hear normally but your parents not being able to do the same. This challenge has also made me realize the importance of teaching Filipino Sign Language (FSL) to those who were willing to learn it.

I have always believed that we should change the mindset that people with hearing impairments are not capable of being good students, workers, friends, lovers, and parents. True enough, more and more Filipinos are becoming well-rounded and socially conscious members of the society by being accepting of others around them, especially those that come in different shapes and sizes.
