Common sense question:

If a trial judge is expected to personally hear and observe the proceedings before deciding a case on the merits, why should senators sitting as an impeachment court be treated differently?

If a senator does not participate in, observe, or hear the proceedings, how can that senator meaningfully decide the case on its merits?

Those who decide should be properly positioned to personally assess the evidence, witnesses, and proceedings.

The principle is simple: you cannot fairly judge what you did not personally hear.
