Remember the days of keypad phones, downloaded ringtones, โ€œGMโ€ text messages, and waiting for unli calls and texts?

Todayโ€™s smartphones may look very different, but one thing remains the same, behind every way we connect are different forms of intellectual property working together.

From patented communication technologies and protected phone designs to copyrighted apps and recognizable trademarks, IP continues to play an important role in driving innovation in telecommunications.

IP helps encourage the continuous development of technologies that make communication faster, smarter, and more accessible across the world.

This World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, letโ€™s take a closer look at how IP helps shape the way we connect, communicate, and innovate.

The Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges - Technology Transfer Office (CSPC-TechTRO), through its Intellectual Property Management Division (IPMD), in partnership with Project 3: Strengthening the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) under the RAISE Program Phase 2, successfully conducted the Intellectual Property Training for Innovation, Business Application, Yielding Strong Rights (IP TIBAY) Seminar-Workshop on Prior Art Search and Patent Drafting (Batch 3).

This five-day capacity-building activity was designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills in prior-art searching and patent draftingkey components in protecting innovations and strengthening intellectual property (IP) rights for research and commercialization. The first phase of the training was held on March 17โ€“18, while the Part 2 is scheduled in April 2026.

The program formally opened with an inspiring message from Dr. Yolanda A. Santorcas, Project Leader of the CSPC RAISE Project, who emphasized the importance of cultivating a strong intellectual property culture within the institution. This was followed by remarks from SUC President III, Dr. Amado A. Oliva, Jr., highlighting the role of intellectual property in driving innovation and institutional growth. Dr. Challiz D. Omorog, Vice President for Research, Innovation and Collaboration, also conveyed the administrationโ€™s support for advancing research protection and utilization.

The first day featured a series of lectures led by key resource persons. Mr. Jhon Ronald B. Bulalacao, Project Technical Aide VI of IPMD discussed the CSPC Intellectual Property Policy and Guidelines, while Mr. Kevin B. Capoles, Head of IPMD delivered an overview of intellectual property and its role in innovation and commercialization.

Meanwhile, Engr. Nino Angelo S. Torre from IPOPHL led the session on prior-art searching, emphasizing the importance of determining the novelty and patentability of inventions through comprehensive review of existing technologies.

Day 1 established a strong foundation for participants, reinforcing the critical role of intellectual property in research development, innovation, and technology transfer.

On Day 2, participants engaged in a hands-on patent searching workshop using their own technologies. This was followed by the presentation of their outputs, where they presented the claims and novelty of their technologies and received valuable feedback to further refine their work.

The succeeding sessions in April 2026 will focus on advancing participantsโ€™ competencies in patent drafting and related applications, ensuring a more in-depth and practical learning experience.
