READ | STATEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT ON THE ATENEO TEAM-BUILDING TRAGEDY IN AURORA

The Department of the Interior and Local Government extends its deepest condolences to the families of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, and to the Ateneo de Manila University community. The loss of two young student-athletes is a tragedy that the nation shares.

The DILG confirms that the Philippine National Police, through the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, has commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8, 2026. Subpoenas have been issued to the coaches and players present during the activity as part of fact-finding efforts, including the examination of possible violations of Republic Act No. 11053, or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018.

The DILG emphasizes: all concerned individuals are expected to fully cooperate with the investigating authorities. Due process will be strictly observed, and accountability will be enforced wherever the facts lead.

We urge the public to refrain from speculation and to allow the proper authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, out of respect for the grieving families and for the truth that must be established.

Layunin ng batas na protektahan ang mga mag-aaral, g**o, at kawani laban sa Gender-Based Sexual Harassment (GBSH) sa loob ng paaralan. May mahalagang tungkulin din ang mga punong-g**o at administrador ng paaralan na:

✅ Magtatag ng Committee on Decorum and Investigation (CODI);
✅ Magpatupad ng kaukulang disiplina laban sa mga sangkot sa GBSH;
✅ Tiyaking agad na naaaksyunan ang mga ulat at reklamo;
✅ Magbigay ng sapat na kaalaman sa mga mag-aaral tungkol sa Safe Spaces Act at mga paraan ng pagre-report.

Maaari ring tumawag sa Unified 911 Hotline para ipaalam ang mga ganitong klaseng insidente, kabilang na ang mga usaping may kinalaman sa mental health.
