Umayos Kayo: Stop Normalizing Misogynistic Social Practices!
It is International Women’s Month, celebrated to urge action for gender equality and women’s rights. In 1988, the Philippine Commission on Women adopted the practice, declaring the first week of March each year as Women’s Week.
With the establishment of, and ongoing work on, certain Philippine regulatory and policy frameworks to support women's rights, do we still need to fight for them? Yes. Even though the country has ranked well in global gender equality reports, gaps remain or continue, particularly in the socioeconomic status of women from the low-income sector, health and survival ratios, and, very recently, educational parity.
Meaningful action can only come from an understanding of the gender gap and the mindset and social norms that create it, and from a desire to change a culture that objectifies women and considers casual sexualization, microagressions, and pambabastos, as harmless or funny.
Apart from the recent remarks of QC Representative B**g Suntay directed at a female celebrity, we are reminded of a currently detained individual who made r**e jokes as well as the audience that found those jokes hilarious.
If our political leaders lack the ability and decency to recognize this behavior in themselves or others, it will take much more than a Women’s Month declaration to fully progress women’s rights. We urge the Congressional leadership to censure QC Representative Suntay for his behavior and strongly remind its members that misogyny should have no place in these times, least of all in Government.
Umayos sana po kayo. Galangin ang mga kababaihan, galangin ang mga Pilipina, galangin ang Pilipinas.
