You probably heard of this before: Buy from “BFP-accredited suppliers.”
Well, no such thing exists under the law.
According to BFP Memorandum Circular No. 2016-016, BFP personnel are strictly prohibited from recommending or endorsing any private supplier or contractor of fire safety equipment.
So if someone says: “You must buy from our “BFP-accredited” supplier”
That’s a red flag!!!
What is prohibited (for BFP personnel):
• Acting as agent or endorser of manufacturers / dealers of fire-safety gear
• Selling fire extinguishers or equipment while in service
• Recommending excessive or unjustified fire safety gear without basis
• Delaying clearance / permits unreasonably
• Soliciting “favor” or money from vendors or business owners
If violated, the officer may face administrative or criminal sanctions, including removal from service.
Tip for Business Owners
• Never feel pressured to buy from a “recommended” supplier — ask for multiple quotes
• Demand transparency: you deserve to know why a certain type / brand / number of fire devices are required
• If someone from BFP pushes a single supplier or brand, take a photo, note the time & place, and report
• Remember: The Fire Code is about safety, not profit for individuals
— Arm yourself with knowledge. If you ever feel pressured or unsure, seek legal help.
